Born a Lion is a fierce mother of an album, fairly exploding with crunching riffs and thunderous rhythms. Sure, the lyrics may be a bit ham-fisted, but with music this aggressive and cocky, that almost seem necessary. Guitarist/vocalist Danko Jones fancies himself a rock & roll outlaw, the illegitimate spawn of Thin Lizzy’s Phil Lynott, raised on a steady diet of 1970s hard rock and punk. His bare-bones, knuckle-dragging brand of hard rock is, in fact, mostly about attitude, combining the solid three-chord crunch of AC/DC with the furious MC5-informed attack of Sweden’s Hellacopters. He and his cohorts--bassist John Calabrese and drummer Damon Richardson--bully their way through 11 bruising cuts, never pausing for anything more than a brief musical breakdown to let Jones testify (a la the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion). It’s a solid formula that they seem unwilling to tamper with much, and why should they? If it works well on the opening “Play the Blues,” it’ll be just as good on the closing “Love is Unkind.” Yep, above everything else, Born a Lion is a consistent album from start to finish, and while not exactly fresh sounding, for 30-plus minutes it kicks some serious ass. --Adem Tepedelen

Album Description

More high voltage than all the AC/DC records put together. Forget Backyard Babies, Hives and Hellacopters. The only rock 'n' roll you need to lead a tolerable life is Danko Jones. 11 tracks. 2002.

This CD is a PERFECT mix of Motor Head , AC/DC with a huge doze of blues and humor. And you know what it's unique cos Danko Jones doesn't copy these great bands but just plays the music they really love .Perfectly and simply composed with dirty sound the entire album makes you move and laugh.Must have CD,I swear.

5.0 out of 5 stars Born a Lion is rock music at it's finest, Nov 5 2003

This review is from: Born A Lion (Audio CD)
Danko Jones is exactly what is missing from the rock genre today. This is straight-up, high-octane, rock and roll, and a little bit of blues for the 21st century.

From the opening track Play the Blues to the last Love Is Unkind, there's plenty there to make a rock lover smile. I do have to admit that my favourite tune in this collection was Lovercall, but aside from that soaring exception, every other track on the album was as awesome and kick-ass as the last.

Although I am not happy about the short running time of the CD (just under 40 minutes) there was nothing else remotely disappointing about it, especially the lack of anger and pessimism that's all too prominent in music today. The raw energy and semi-satirical lyrics were a refreshing change from the self-pity and whining that typically flood the radio waves.

Danko is also one of the best rock shows out there today, and this album comes very close to capturing the intensity of those performances. It's fun to listen to, and leaves you with a good feeling. Anyone out there who misses listening to some good hard rock music, without the blind wrath of rage-rock bands, or the corniness of bands like AC/DC, this is definitely one CD you should pick up. I guarantee you won't be disappointed.

4.0 out of 5 stars Casey Jones, Jan 9 2003
By

This review is from: Born A Lion (Audio CD)
Danko rocks the house on this love sux tribute. I find it hard to believe that its been about half a decade since Casey Jones swept the New York city streets clean of thugs. This CD is the kind of music you wanna hear if you feel that rock has left the radio. Music has changed in a way but Danko keeps rock alive the way it was meant to be. Casey jones you got a new hero to compete with and his name is jones, Danko Jones.
