Book Description

March 26 2003
Almost a decade after its original publication, award winner and Governor General Literary Award nominee Joseph Boyden's classic book of short stories is finally being reissued. Born With A Tooth, Boyden's debut work of fiction, is a collection of thirteen beautifully written stories about aboriginal life in Ontario. They are stories of love, unexpected triumph, and a passionate belief in dreams. They are also stories of anger and longing, of struggling to adapt, of searching but remaining unfulfilled. The collection includes 'Bearwalker', a story that introduces a character who appears again in Boyden's novel Three Day Road. By taking on a new voice in each story, Joseph Boyden explores aboriginal stereotypes and traditions in a most unexpected way. Whether told by a woman trying to forget her past or by a drunken man trying to preserve his culture, each story paints an unforgettable and varied image of modern aboriginal culture in Ontario. An extraordinary first book, Born With A Tooth reveals why Joseph Boyden is a writer worth reading.

Review

“A debut with impressive bite.” - The Globe and Mail

“There are lyrical moments which possess an eerie power – especially where Boyden writes about the northern landscape and the human relationship to it.” - The Independent --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.

From the Publisher

"With Irish and Ojibwa blood in his veins, and a history of summers and teaching residencies on reservations with names like Christian Island, Kashechewan and Attawapiskat, Boyden writes with striking authority from a place poised between native pain and white indifference. If you've ever speed-walked past a raven-haired drunk on a city sidewalk and felt the paleface's burden of pity and repulsion, this is a book to carry you beyond such fleeting emotion." The Globe and Mail

Nominated for the prestigious Pushcart Prize in 1997, Joseph Boyden now delivers a collection of delightful, improbable tales and cautionary fables that the Quill & Quire calls "emotionally forthright and complex." Boyden has created worlds that confound accepted perception and prejudices. Worlds in which the town nerd learns how to literally escape his own ugly skin, and a young girl befriends and falls in love with a starving timber wolf. Worlds that are immediate and moving.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolute page-turner! Feb. 17 2009
By Annie
Format:Paperback
I loved every story. After reading Three Day Road I went looking for other things he'd written and was so happy I stumbled upon Born With a Tooth. The characters drew me in and taught me lessons about life I had yet to learn. This was a warm invitation to experience native culture and the freezing terrain that defines it, through the charming mind of Joseph Boyden. For a person who is afraid of animals, I felt I understood the actions of the girl in one story who falls in love with a savage wolf who contentedly eats bread crumbs from her outstretched hand, like a domestic animal. The settings proved to be a beautiful destination, not a cold, brutal climate.

5.0 out of 5 stars Three thumbs up! Sept. 11 2011
Format:Paperback
I agree, I couldn't put it down. I tore through it like a ravenous wolf on a moose carcass. I cried my heart out when the boy's knee hit the wrestler. Born with a Tooth was the third of Boyden's books I read in succession. He is my new favorite Canadian author.

Joseph Boyden is undoubtedly one of the great writers in Canada today. Loved Three Day Road and I was hooked on his writing after that. Born With A Tooth takes you there . My husband lived in Moose Factory and recognized immediately.

There are two types of books for me: ones I love and rush through as though I'm word starved and others. This is of the former.
