Great upgrade, Jan 17 2012

I do a little more than DIY stuff intermittently. I decided to upgrade my levels in anticipation of an upcoming job of running new circuits in an old house, gutter work and elevations for drainage. I love the vertical level for quickly marking studs and marking outlets - very quick and works well from the floor while freeing my hands. The gutter job was a dud as there was no quick way to mount the level, and for the downspouts the laser light was not strong enough to overcome ambient sunlight. The elevation job also was a washout, but I intend to try it at night.
The Bosch level came with a protective bag. Very impressive and strong construction. With such an expensive and potentially delicate tool - it does need protection from other items in the tool box. Nonetheless, the bag is sitting unused as the design makes it difficult to access the level. I was constantly fighting the to pull it out - requiring two hands, and putting it back in, two hands and it fits only in one direction. And the laser target film kept getting in the way when loading, and being inadvertently pulled out when removing the level - as there is no separate pocket for the target. I ended up permanently borrowing one of my wife's unused padded cosmetic bags which has a nice wide opening that I can easily throw the level into and pull out quickly with one hand.
Overall, the tool is much more versatile than I had anticipated for inside jobs. Outside jobs it is pretty useless. The bag is well made but improperly designed to serve its objective in a real-world working environment. The tool needs protection - so think of something that you can easily use.

Great Self-Leveling Laser, Jun 16 2011

This laser is bullet proof. The only real setup requirement is to adjust the unit's position so that it is at the height that you want the line and then adjust it to approximately level (the automatic leveling requires the unit to be within plus or minus 4 degrees of level). This is easily accomplished with a good tripod. If the unit is out of that range of level, the lines flash on and off to tell you. There are threaded holes on the bottom to allow attachment to a tripod or other mounting device. There are also magnets on the bottom and side of the base so that you could stick it to a ferrous metal surface. There are also optional mounting aids including a pole that extends from the floor to the ceiling that can be purchased separately. I suppose that the pole might be more easily adjusted to accommodate a very high laser line that would require the tripod to be set on an elevated surface.
The laser lines are easily visible, even in a relatively bright room and are very sharp and narrow in width. The controls are very simple, there is an on/off switch and a function switch that allows you to have a self leveling vertical line, a self leveling horizontal line or both at the same time and then the same three line options without the self leveling so that you can tilt either or both axis. In the modes without self leveling a light next to the function button comes on the let you know that the self leveling is not active. In this mode, as you tilt the unit, you still go through the plus or minus 4 degrees where the unit tries to self level, but then allows you to continue past that range without flashing the lines on and off.
The unit comes with a carrying case and, even when in the case, is very compact and easy to carry. It also comes with the required three AA batteries. It also comes with an instruction manual that is in good English and very instructive. It even gives the method to verify that the self leveling function is within specs (this is not as simple as one might imagine).
It appears to be very well made and feels solid. It has a rubber coating at strategic places to protect the unit.
I really like this unit. It may be a bit on the exotic side but, now that I have gotten used to it, I don't want to go back to the old plumb bob and manual laser. This is a great tool that I highly recommend.

Awesome budget laser level, May 25 2011

If you have been hoping to spring for a quality laser level one day but the high-end prices put you off, Bosch has come to the rescue.
This level is top quality, yet compact in size and in price. The compact size is actually a handy advantage -- it easily fits in most tool pouches or tool boxes or glove boxes. It shoots both horizontal and vertical laser lines.
When you get yours, follow the user guide and check it for accuracy first thing -- specs are accuracy to within 3/16" at 26 feet. If it's not within spec, call customer support right away to get it adjusted. I checked mine per instructions and with a Stabila four-foot level and it was spot on.
As I said, it's compact. It's only about 30% bigger than a 25-foot contractor's tape measure. It weighs about the same as a quality SLR camera, so a sturdy camera tripod works great as a mount. It's not a 360-degree projector -- the laser lines only project on one wall at a time. But the level will rotate 360 degrees on its own base, so you can leave the tripod in a set position while you manually reposition the level to follow the work or make marks around a room -- very convenient, since repositioning the tripod might change the height of the level.
The unit automatically shuts off if it's tilted beyond self-leveling accuracy range (which I guess to be about 5 degrees).
There's a three-way mode switch on top switches laser lines between horizontal, vertical, or both.
It flashes every few minutes when batteries get low.
It comes ready to use with a set of three AA batteries and a very nice pouch.
This laser level is a winner!
