Ready for all drilling applications in materials from concrete to wood to metal, the lightweight yet powerful Bosch HDS181-02 Compact Tough cordless hammer drill/driver's 7-1/2-inch head length is the smallest in its class, yet it delivers top performance with strong power. It works with all Bosch 18-volt lithium-ion batteries, and this kit includes two Slim Pack 1.5 Ah HC (high-capacity) batteries. They provide up to 50 percent more runtime over standard lithium-ion batteries and include an electronic battery fuel gauge to ensure you have enough power for the job.

Fast Speeds and High Torque
Part of the Compact Tough series, the HDS181-02 works at two optimized speeds--one ideal for high-torque applications (0-500 RPM) and one ideal for high-speed applications (0-1,700 RPM)--and it provides a maximum of 600 inch-pounds of torque. The 4-pole open frame motor and newly developed gearbox provide exceptional power. The 18+1 clutch settings included in this Compact Tough model and a variable-speed trigger help you match the best speed to the job, so you can achieve precise results. It can drive up to 500 screws per charge when used with the 3.0 Ah HC Fat Pack battery (not included).
Balanced Design and Easy Bit Changes
The HDS181-02's Durashield housing is constructed with ABS/nylon composite, which makes the housing flexible on impact and able to withstand tough job-site conditions. Unlike competitive tools, which use a conventional plastic housing, Durashield will not crack and can easily withstand 10-foot drops.
The ratcheting single-sleeve 1/2-inch keyless chuck makes bit changes simple and quick with one hand. The ergonomically designed handle and soft-grip wrapped housing offer a comfortable fit for extended working time. And for even greater convenience, LEDs provide illumination when you are working in dark or enclosed areas.
Flexible Power System
In addition to the 1.5 Ah HC lithium batteries included in this kit, this drill/driver can be used with Bosch's batteries from its 18-volt line, including the 1.3 Ah Slim Pack battery (model BAT609), the 2.6-Ah Fat Pack battery (model BAT618), and the 3.0 Ah Fat Pack battery (model BAT619G). If you're looking for a lighter-weight option, the Slim Pack is the perfect choice. If longer runtime is what you need, the Fat Pack will do the job.

Compared to our previous drills, this one stands out (in a good way). The kit comes with an extra battery,which in this day of costly attachments and accessories is a major bonus. Charging time was fairly fast and lasted much longer than previous drills we've owned. The light weight is also nice, and the balancing is spot on. The torque is amazing, there is plenty of power when you pull the trigger. So far we've used it around the house for minor repairs and it's performed amazingly. The only complaints we've noticed (and really, they're rather minor) is that using standard chuck is cumbersome and requires changing the torque settings to do. This is rather inefficient and time consuming. While easily elevated with a quick connect bit system, since one was not provided it was a bit disappointing. An additional black mark is the failure to include a screw driver bit or holding bracket for it. Most drills, especially keyless chuck variety come standard with this feature and it has been invaluable in the past. Overall, we've been very pleased and will definitely look for more Bosch products in the future.

Did a lot of research and almost strayed from my faithful Bosch but I kept going back to this one and am so glad I did....Best one out there for the price in my opinion.

Really, this thing is incredible. I did a lot of research, and read ALL the reviews. This drill consistently has top reviews... now I know why. For starters this is a very very compact design (I think it's the smallest hammer drill on the market). Don't let that fool you. Drilling 1/2 inch holes in a public cement sidewalk - no problem - each hole took about 4 seconds. I used it to build a deck that was mounted to cement leveling blocks. This drill doesn't even blink. Need control for fine carpentry? Again, not an issue. It's lightweight and compact size REALLY make life better after long hot hours in the sun. Just for kicks I went to the local HD to touch everything comparable, the Bosch simply feels better, it's lighter (even with the big battery) and has much better balance and control. It's hard for me to comment on battery life for the drill only because I bought a set that had the simply astounding impact driver, and also purchased the cordless circular saw. Working a 9-hour day, cutting drilling, and driving screws for decking, fencing, and other mid-level woodwork projects, the high capacity and the slim battery that came in my set last about a day and a half. The high capacity and slim pack batteries charge in a half hour and 15 minutes, respectively. For occasional use, they last months. The three tools together replace a truckload worth of gear, can accomplish a huge range of tasks, and could fit in a bicycle basket.
