Atmospheric music for the adult fan,
By A Customer
This review is from: Both Sides Now (Audio CD)
What a shock to hear the current voice of Joni Mitchell! I would not have known it was she. The high trembly girlish warble is now a smoky, emotion-evoking womanly sound that suits the songs on this album to perfection. "Both Sides Now" in this version touches me more than the old version because it conveys a life of experience. I can see why it was chosen for a key scene in the film "Love, Actually." It's a good album for daydreaming and relaxing, maybe with cocktail in hand.

Looking Back on Life and Love,
By A Customer
This review is from: Both Sides Now (Audio CD)
I never much cared for Joni's original version of "Both Sides Now". Listening to it conjured-up remembrances of my days as a "hippie" in the Yorkville district of Toronto: paisley shirts, flowered dresses, sandals and strumming about love - or what I thought love was - on an 'out-of-tune' guitar on a street-step somewhere. But this time around, her rendition is worth the price of the CD all by itself. The song has been recast through the eyes of someone who has likely lived the melody and, therefore, has brought to it a bitter-sweet reverie that reaches out to one's heart and tugs at it mercilessly. Intimate and exquisitely anguished, the song is now a sumptuous vehicle for Joni's wisened voice and painful reminesences. For anyone who has lived....and loved, this is a reading that simply cannot be missed.

Joni enters a mature, new era,
By
This review is from: Both Sides Now (Audio CD)
I have to admit, I'm one of those people who have listened to "Court And Spark," "Blue" and the like for years, never getting into some of those experimental albums some fans seem to adore. But this album is Joni in a very new place. Like Billie Holiday (whose "You've Changed" she covers), Joni has reworked the music to fit the changes in her voice over the course of decades. Don't excpect the old stuff here-- you won't even recognize her voice. But this is a sultry, smoke-filled, fragile, absolutely magnificent Joni. This album rightfully can not be considered among her others, although like Bowie, she has always been a chameleon. But this... this stuff is jazzy, raw, sensitive, so very much like the later Billie Holiday it's amazing. The fact that she covers two of her own songs ("A Case Of You" and the title track) shows how she, and her music, have matured. If this is Joni's new style, she could easily do an Ella Fitzgerald-style collection of songbooks; her work is that good. Congratulations, Joni. You've done it yet again.
