Updated as a contemporary thriller/vehicle for Matt Damon, this second take on Robert Ludlum's classic spy thriller (previously a Richard Chamberlain-starring TV miniseries) may be more interested in action set pieces than faithfulness to its literary roots. But composer John Powell's skillful score goes a long way toward steeping the well-orchestrated stunts and car chases with an aura of mystery and unease. With a résumé heavy in animation (Shrek, Chicken Run, Antz) and spoofs (Evolution, Rat Race, Just Visiting), Powell is obviously adept at parodying the tired McAction score. Here he deftly sidesteps such clichés, delivering up a remarkable, subtle score of restlessly shifting moods and color. The plaintive oboe figure of the "Main Title" segues to vaguely East Asian orchestral motifs, then increasingly prominent use of wily, ever-shifting electronic rhythms and effects. The effect is compelling and almost hypnotic, music that perfectly underscores the lead character's identity crisis and the web of intrigue he's caught up in. Powell spares us the typical bombast and shrewdly lets the visual action speak for itself. This wise composer understands that less can be infinitely more. --Jerry McCulley

5.0 out of 5 stars Bourne Identity, one of the years best! Jan 25 2004
Format:Audio CD
When I saw the movie, all I remembered was "car chase". But I later bought the soundtrack, and loved it, but wondered why the car chase wasn't on it, well I downloaded it off kazza. I liked it at first but the vocals in the track turn it into a dance track(which it is), not action music. The reason Moby's and Okenfold's tracks weren't included, was because John Powell produced the CD, and since those tracks weren't by him, he didn't include them in the soundtrack. This Cd is one of Powell's best action scores to date, the main theme is superb. The way the theme is played with strings make it a perfect theme to the movie. I noticed a mistake, the track "Jason's Theme" isn't his theme, heck, it's not even played in the movie. The correct "Jason's Theme" got switched, Drum and Bass Remix is Jason's Theme. Powell really shows us that he can make a great in hardly anytime.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bourne Identity Soundtrack Jan 13 2004
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
I don't listen to very much music, which is often distracting, but this collection I can listen to repeatedly, without tiring of it.
Suitable to study or read by, a very big plus.
It is not boring, nor demanding/attention-stealing. It is an excellent audio "picture" of the motion picture, which is very interesting: straight, clear and clean principles evoked by the lead character--very well-done by Matt Damon.
The absence of vocals is a plus, and the "repetition" of themes is well-done, not over-done. I don't consider the two "missing" pieces, one by Moby, the other by Paul Oakenfold, important.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Powerful Dec 17 2003
Format:Audio CD
I bought the soundtrack recently after wanting it for a year, and I have to say I'm not dissapointed. It's become my favorite cd...I did want to have Ready, STeady, Go in the soundtrack, but thats not the only song thats good to listen to. Some of the main themes do repeat themselves a lot in the soundtrack, however the entire album contibutes a lot to the dramatic fast-paced and lively emotions of the movie.

It's a great buy.
