Product Description

From Amazon.ca

Do away with your space-consuming workout equipment and consolidate to an innovative Bowflex SelectTech 1090 adjustable dumbbell. Offering adjustable resistance from 10 pounds all the way up to 90 pounds (in 5-pound increments),

The SelectTech 1090 does the work of multiple dumbbells in one with its innovative adjustable dial.
the SelectTech 1090 does the work of multiple dumbbells in one, so you don't need to dedicate more than a few feet of space to your workout area. The 1090 dumbbell is outfitted with a single handle connected to a dial mechanism. As you turn the dial upward, the handle latches on to additional weight plates, with an easy-to-read display telling you how much weight you've chosen. At lighter weights, you can perform basic toning and strength exercises, such as curls and raises, while at heavier weights, you can do more demanding lifts like shrugs and lunges. Best of all, you won't have to buy new dumbbells as you get stronger, as the SelectTech 1090s provide all the weight you need.

Bowflex SelectTech seemed awesome when I first purchased it and received. It had extremely convenient dials that allowed you to select your weight without a hassle and what looked to be a pretty sweet mechanism.

The draw back? The weights lasted for a month. Even with delicate care, the dumbbells still broke on me. I have both models, the 552 and 1090 and the long-lasting quality was not there. Bowflex will give you a limited warranty for a year if you submit it during the first month. But it's limited. And they are more then willing to sell you their parts (and labour) for a marked up price.

Conclusion: They have a great design but the plastic parts will never be able to handle the everyday use of what dumbbells are intended for. If this were made of all metal parts perhaps it would of been a different story.

So first off I do own the 552 set as well. I mainly got these because I needed more weight. The handles on these things are not smooth like the 552's so you will probably need lifting gloves for these. The cam locks are not as smooth as the 552's system but they are more heavy duty, I'm sure they will loosen up some with use. These also offer a offset feature where you can have different weights on opposite sides of the same dumbbell which the 552's do not offer. You cannot beat the price here on Amazon I saved a lot by buying them here. If you need the extra weight then get these but if 52.5 pounds will be enough then go for the 552's.

Do not buy these items used. The one I bought drops plates every single time I remove it from the base. It's either going to cost me the cost of the product to return it, or about the same to buy a new handle for the plates.

You can get a far better deal elsewhere than here. One dumbbell? $450? Have had these now for 2 years, and they are still in perfect shape, mostly. The sticky logo on one of them has fallen off (have to silicone it back in one day)and now the bolt shows. Got mine on ebay with the 5.1 bench for $550! Drove up to Toronto to get them. Shop around, there are better deals. Bowlfex gives great deals now & then (free shipping etc)

The weights are long--17.5/8". Took me a while to get use to using them. They are not a perfect solid d.b. replacement, but at the right price (not here, obviously) you can save hundreds over a stack of dedicated d.b. and tons of space. The knurl is deep. Gloves are required for heavier weight. I man up now & then and use them without gloves, but it is rough! Better than them slipping out I guess. The grip is fatter than my Olympic d.b. handle.
You can't drop these or they will break. But why would you anyway? I've never found it necessary to drop any d.b. so it's just a habit for me. The good thing about these is the offset. One end can be made heavier. So, it's really a 2.5 increase instead of the usual 5 with regular d.b. Very good for sticking points.
These are for the average trainer. A seasoned bodybuilder would find them rather light for compound exercises. Still, if you can d.b shoulder press the set, yer doing pretty good!

I've learned how to work around the extra length. But my Olympic d.b. handle is even longer, so this is no big deal. With the 5.1 Bowlfex bench, it's a perfect small space, free weight solution. I love to train at home, no waiting for equipment, nobody staring at you, etc. If you have issues, there is a warranty.

Product was good, the straps that hold the dumbbell in are poor though. One of the dumbbell was missing the end caps so the bolts are showing on both ends (nothing major) the retailer have me a partial credit due to it..
Receievd the dumbells fairly quick so I can't complain ..
