Bowflex SelectTech seemed awesome when I first purchased it and received. It had extremely convenient dials that allowed you to select your weight without a hassle and what looked to be a pretty sweet mechanism.

The draw back? The weights lasted for a month. Even with delicate care, the dumbbells still broke on me. I have both models, the 552 and 1090 and the long-lasting quality was not there. Bowflex will give you a limited warranty for a year if you submit it during the first month. But it's limited. And they are more then willing to sell you their parts (and labour) for a marked up price.

Conclusion: They have a great design but the plastic parts will never be able to handle the everyday use of what dumbbells are intended for. If this were made of all metal parts perhaps it would of been a different story.

I wouldn't recommend anyone in buying them, no matter how gently you intend on using them. I was so disappointed in these I had to review it, which is a first.

Bowflex makes a solid product. These are all you need if you are looking for a set of dumbbells. Selecting your size is easy, the grips are comfortable, and they don't take up a lot of space. That said, they are a bit cumbersome at first because they are a little bit longer and wider than standard dumbbells. You need to be gentle when cradling them, as well, because if they are dropped into the cradle the plates will start to stick, and eventually they won't work anymore. This is my second set because the person I was sharing them with did exactly what I just warned against. Needless to say, no one uses this set now except me. Used properly, they will last a long time.

Been using these for a few weeks, and I love them. My only complaint is that sometimes the plates get stuck for a second after adjusting, and I have to re-adjust. Overall, though, I'm pretty happy with them.

Well so far so good, I have not encountered any of the issues that some of the other reviewers have had; the weights fit into the slots quite easily, the weight selector work as advertised. I have not done any 'drop tests' with this product and do not intend to as I have damaged normal weights doing so. All around they do what I want, they work and makes switching weights during a work out much quicker.

Purchased these weights for a few reasons:
First, my home gym is small and I didn't want to loose a lot of space for a conventional weight set. So was looking for an adjustable set.
Second, other reviewers and other sites had given these weights good ratings and reviews.
Third, for the price, these weights can work out cheaper than most conventional sets of multiple weights.

Starting at 5lb, and going up in 2.5 lb increments to 25 lb, (5, 7.5, 10, 12.5, 15, 17.5, 20, 22.5, 25) then in 5 lb increments after that ( 30, 35, 40, 45, 50) finishing off at 52.5 lb. It's basically 15 pairs of weights.

Adjustment is fast and easy, simply change the dial at each end of each weight. The weights stay balanced by picking up the same weights on each side of the grip. Takes a couple of seconds to go from one weight to another.

Easy to keep clean as all weights can be taken out of the base individually for cleaning/sanitation, and go back in in a certain order only.

Plates lock in place and feel solid on the bar/grip. I trust them overhead, upside down, etc. (I tried to shake them loose first, stayed in place and solid.) Feels good in the hand, and not overly bulky on smaller weights as some mentioned. Grip is good and firm.
I read some reviews about them breaking/locking, the ONLY way i can think of breaking them is if they are being slammed to the ground or dropped from height after a set. Simply put, look after them and they will serve you for years I'd say.

Mine came extremely well packed, delivered in a couple of days to the door. Total package IS HEAVY. Comes in at about 140lb I believe.

Mine also came with an instructional DVD, training guide and info book.

These are as great and easy to use as I expected. The included video is very useful as it not only demonstrates the exercises included in the manual but it explains proper use of the dumbbells (which may or may not be common sense).

I save so much space by not needing an entire rack of bar bells. At 5 and 7.5 lbs the bells are big. Rubberized grip isn't the greatest. I find my baby-smooth palms almost slipping when heavier weights are used. But such is the issue when one avoids manual labour for an entire lifetime I suppose.
If I had the space and wasn't seeing a move in the future I likely would've gone with a complete bar bell rack.

We used to live in a very, very small space with two kids (a renovated cabin), so my dumbel collection felt like it was taking up half the house. As I was getting into the heavier weights, I decided to buy a set of these to replace the dumbels- best decision ever! The only con (for me) is if you are doing a drop set then it isn't as quick of a weight switch as opposed to using dumbels. But totally worth it! A few months ago, the house that I described burned down, and when we went back to look at the wreckage, there were the weights- blackened and a bit deformed, but still intact. I loved these weights so much that it probably was barely over a month before I ordered another set of these for myself- it was in the top 5 list of things I had in my priorities to re-supply, and I'm so glad that I have them again! And now, to order the stands one day!
