Book Description

March 1 2012
Anne Yarbrough and her husband Greg Brown moved from city life in the United States to a remote Nova Scotia island, looking for something they couldn't name but felt was missing in their lives. Bowl of Light is Anne's record of their years on the island. Bowl of Light is a story about turning away from an over-developed, consumer-driven culture and gradually learning to embrace a quieter life in a more subtle world. It's told in fragments, the way life usually happens and the way we are usually able to make some meaning of it all, unfolding day by day and season by season. It is an explorer's tale about a place both near at hand and far away, both familiar and strange, and riddled with hidden spots and secret things. Bowl of Light is a meditation in bits and pieces on the power of place: an island made up of rivulets and ruins, bogs, boulders, ancient stone walls, fallen dead wood and spruce forests, all of it wrapped in water and silence and light; and wrapped, too, in that which we call holy, for want of some better word.

5.0 out of 5 stars Life in a different world Feb. 9 2014

People dream of escaping the hectic life but very few actually do it. In this excellent writing Anne Yarbrough describes life on an island off the coast of Nova Scotia, inhabited by two people. It is a life where she was able to stop and observe the details of life around her, the beauty of her surroundings, the wildlife, the new way of life they had to adapt to. This is a well written adventure. I enjoyed it very much and would recommend it.

Short essays on living for a few years on an island on the coast of Nova Scotia. Having lived for a decade in the remote interior of this province, Anne Yarborough's writings were like sparkling diamonds to me.

5.0 out of 5 stars Evocative, peaceful, thoughtful meditation on (a magical) place March 11 2014

I bought this because I am obsessed with Nova Scotia :) I dream of moving there one day, or at the very least I hope I get to go there for a long visit. Until that dream becomes a reality, this wonderful book is my indulgence. Whenever I open it, I am transported to a deliciously lonely forested island off the south shore of Nova Scotia, and the very seasons and elements become my intimate teachers and friends.

I like to read one or to of the short pieces each day, though lately I try to pace myself because I don't want it to end...

The writing is clear, vivid and serene, and instills in me a feeling of sipping crystal water from a forest spring. The book is a meditation on place, and contains little drops of insight that I personally felt very enriched by, I have highlighted many passages.

I recommend it to anyone interested in clear awareness and simple living, being close to nature, to anyone who enjoys standing in the wind and rain and feeling alive and small and growing and changing with the seasons.
