5.0 out of 5 stars The first book I remember reading on my own... July 19 2008
Format:Paperback
I am an 17 year old girl, and I can honestly say that when I think back to reading in my childhood, Ill never forget the amazing story of The Boxcar children. It was the first book I totally read on my own, and it is a classic in its own right. I remember bringing the book home from the library, and not being able to take my eyes of the pages for one second. I believe i finished the book in one day. I'll never forget this triumphent, suspensefilled story. It was a huge part of my childhood, and I hope to one day be able to read this story to my children.

3.0 out of 5 stars Aging Badly, But OK For Ages 6-9 Jun 20 2003
Format:Paperback
The characters are cardboard, the writing is clunky, and the dialogue is stiffer than a two-by-four. It was written in 1942, and many details may be puzzling to twenty-first century kids: cloth handkerchiefs, glass milk bottles, dump-picking, store purchases wrapped in paper and string, and no antibiotic drugs. The assumptions about gender roles have aged badly, too, but that's another review.

BUT, my seven-year old can't wait to find out what happens next and (though I'm reading this one *to* her) could readily read the book herself to find out . . . and that's worth two extra stars. Give it a try: if the beginning chapter-book-reader in your life likes it, there's a lot more where this one came from!

5.0 out of 5 stars Classic Dec 29 2012
By Amanda TOP 1000 REVIEWER

A classic book. I read it aloud to my six-year-old daughter and four-year-old son and they enjoy it. This is the more traditional series of books for kids this age; if you like this, you'll likely want to check out the Magic Tree House books, which are a modern twist.
