Mel Gibson's Oscar-winning 1995 Braveheart is an impassioned epic about William Wallace, the 13th-century Scottish leader of a popular revolt against England's tyrannical Edward I (Patrick McGoohan). Gibson cannily plays Wallace as a man trying to stay out of history's way until events force his hand, an attribute that instantly resonates with several of the actor's best-known roles, especially Mad Max. The subsequent camaraderie and courage Wallace shares in the field with fellow warriors is pure enough and inspiring enough to bring envy to a viewer, and even as things go wrong for Wallace in the second half, the film does not easily cave in to a somber tone. One of the most impressive elements is the originality with which Gibson films battle scenes, featuring hundreds of extras wielding medieval weapons. After Eisenstein's Alexander Nevsky, Orson Welles's Chimes at Midnight, and even Kenneth Branagh's Henry V, you might think there is little new that could be done in creating scenes of ancient combat; yet Gibson does it. --Tom Keogh

Additional Features

In his engaging audio commentary, Mel Gibson is deeply appreciative of his cast and collaborators (especially Oscar-winning cinematographer John Toll) and, of course, quite amusing when he wants to be. Gibson notes, "I fell in love a little bit" when he cast then-newcomer Catherine McCormack as William Wallace's ill-fated bride, and throughout his informative commentary, the actor-director conveys genuine passion for the story and a firm understanding of the period history that informed the entire production. The accompanying documentary, Mel Gibson's "Braveheart": A Filmmaker's Passion, is a 28-minute promotional film with behind-the-scenes footage and interviews with primary cast and crew. Particularly interesting are sequences revealing the equipment required for the epic battle scenes, including air cannons for firing dozens of arrows, and costly mechanical horses created to simulate animal-related violence. Viewers will especially admire the considerable challenge of filming in Europe's rainiest region, Scotland, where inclement weather enhanced the film's gritty authenticity. --Jeff Shannon

5.0étoiles sur 5 Please try to get your nationalities right!, Fév 4 2008
This review is from: Braveheart (Widescreen) (DVD)
To all North American reviewers of Braveheart. Please try and get your nationalities right when you review this movie.

"Brits" or "British" people are NOT the same as "English".

Quick history lesson. What is now "England" was initially populated by the Brits. Scotland was populated by picts and Scots (who came over from Ireland). The Romans conquered England, but stopped at Scotland. The Romans eventually left. The vikings started raiding the west coast of Scotland and England. The British kings invited in the Angles and Saxons to their land to help them defend their island from the vikings. Instead, the Saxons took such a liking to the land, they invaded en masse. They pushed the "Brits" in Wales, Cornwall and Scotland. Thus England (comes from Angles) was populated by and large by the Anglo-Saxons (who were German and Danish in origin). The Brits lived in Wales, Cornwall, Brittany (N.France), South Scotland, Isle of Man (basically the gallic speaking areas of today).

The French Normans then invaded England in 1066, to take over from the Saxon kings. Thus England was populated by a mix of Anglo-Saxons and Normans.

Modern day terminology is as follows;

England, Scotland and Wales COMBINED equal "Great Britain".
Add Northern Ireland to that list and you get the "United Kingdom" or UK.

Ethnically the English or not (by and large)"Brits". So to label the enemies of the Scots as "Brits" is both ethnically and historically incorrect. There were far more "Brtis" in Scotland than in England.

Hope that helps.

I am quite sure Americans and Canadians would not appreciate being labelled as "Mexicans" in film reviews. Likewise I dislike it when we Brits are mixed up with the English.

5.0étoiles sur 5 "FREEEEEEEEEEEEEEDOM", Sep 5 2009

BRAVEHEART is what epic film making is all about. It has everything you could want in a movie, great battle scenes, a tragic love story, beautiful costumes, great scenery and a haunting score by James Horner. Gibson did an unbelievable job directing and acting in this film. The NEW Saphire Blu-Ray is outstanding. The lush landscapes of Ireland and Scotland really stand out in high-def not to mention the lovely Sophie Marceau & Catherine McCormack. The Dolby True-HD track is also very good. If you like old time Hollywood big budget epic film making like Lawrence Of Arabia, El Cid or Ben Hur then this is a must for your Blu collection.

PS. "EVERY MAN DIES. NOT EVERY MAN REALLY LIVES"

5.0étoiles sur 5 An awesome historical,action epic of a film, Mars 29 2009

As I said before, I love a historical film...hmm...because after watching the movie, you can research online or in a book, and compare differences between the film and what really happen. I had watched this film, and I thought it was an awesome historical, action epic of a film; and also the musical score is the best James Horner score I had ever heard since the animated film An American Tail.

This film about the historical, boyhood-to-manhood, account of the legendary Scot, William Wallace, who gained recognition when he came to the forefront of the First War of Scottish Independence by opposing Edward I of England (or Edward the Longshanks) and subsequently abetted (and enamored) by Edward's daughter-in-law Princess Isabelle (WHAT?! and I always thought he's was always faithful to Murron MacClannough, even when she died!) and a claimant to the Scottish throne, Robert the Bruce. The film instantly became a favorite among people, and won 5 Oscars including Best Picture of 1995.
