No one would confuse the desperate dad Bryan Cranston plays in this character-driven drama with the fun-loving Hal from Malcolm in the Middle. In AMC's Breaking Bad, Walter White lives in the suburbs with his wife--and wears tighty-whiteys--but the similarities end there. During the pilot, the cash-strapped chemistry teacher finds out he has inoperable lung cancer. He and Skyler (Deadwood's Anna Gunn) have one son, Walter Jr. (R.J. Mitte), and a daughter on the way. With two years to get his affairs in order, Walter comes up with a wild plan: he and former student Jesse (Aaron Paul), a drug dealer, will open a meth lab.

In the hands of creator Vince Gilligan (The X-Files), Bad's first season plays like the improbable offspring of Weeds and The Shield. With nothing left to lose, the Albuquerque 50-year-old uses his death sentence as a catalyst to break every rule he's ever followed while keeping his family--including Skyler's radiologist sister, Marie (Betsy Brandt), and her DEA agent husband, Hank (Dean Norris)--out of the loop. Throughout these seven episodes, Walt takes on a hostage, a dead body, and a partner who likes to sample his own product. Based on the description alone, the program shouldn't work as well as it does, except Gilligan and company keep the situations psychologically believable and Emmy winner Cranston makes Walt surprisingly sympathetic as he swings between compassion and self-interest. As he tells his students, "Chemistry is the study of change," a statement that applies equally well to the show, since Walt ends up in a very different place than the one he began. This three-disc set comes complete with cast and crew commentary, an installment of AMC's Shootout, two featurettes, deleted scenes, and screen tests. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

4.0 out of 5 stars Breaking Bad - Season 1 DVD review, Jan 21 2010

One of the - if not THE - best show on cable TV. This is a phenomenal show start to finish, everything from the concept, the writing, the cinematography, heck even the music compositions and soundtrack is awesome. My only beef with it is, and a minor at that, is the fact that are only 7 episodes. When Season 1 was filmed it was the year of the infamous Writers Guild Strike and of course it affected a lot of network shows (see: 24 season 6, brutal) so it falls short in that perspective but an otherwise flawless show. Also, the extras and trailers are a nice bonus. I'm very picky with the shows I watch but if you're a big fan of Dexter, The Wire, LOST, Weeds then I highly recommended Breaking Bad and can't wait for season 3 to start in March '10!

5.0 out of 5 stars An unexpected reaction, Jan 16 2012
By

My brother told me about this series several weeks ago. I initially scoffed. A "dark comedy" about a dying high school chemistry teacher who turns to producing meth in order to provide for his family...with the main character being played by the dad from Malcolm in the Middle? I thought the premise was odd and the casting suspect. How wrong I was.

I'm quite choosy with TV shows--one has to be, with the glut of choices available. I took a chance on Breaking Bad and was completely hooked. As others have stated in their reviews, everything from the dialogue, to the cinematography, to the plot, to the acting makes for a cringe-inducing, mesmerizing, guffaw-producing gem. The lead actors (Bryan Cranston of M in the M fame and Aaron Paul) are phenomenal. Breaking Bad is completely worthy of the praise it's earned and so much more.

5.0 out of 5 stars Television doesn't get any better, Nov 24 2009

Chemistry gets lung cancer. He's living on a lousy teacher's salary. His wife in pregnant and doesn't work. His son is mildly handicapped. How's he going to provide a legacy? What are they going to live on should he die? He'll use his skills in chemistry to make crystal meth. How evil is that? Where's the line between right and wrong. How does a teacher relate used to the rules of regular life adapt to the do or die rules of the underworld. The contrasts are fantastic. His partner in crime, a former student still calls him Mr. White. How good is that? "Weeds" on cocaine. Very addictive.
