Product Description

From Booklist

Like many TV courtroom dramas "ripped from today's headlines," Fahy's novel about a man driven to desperation compellingly takes as its jumping-off point reality--in this case, America's seriously, some say disastrously, flawed health care delivery system. The catalyst for the plot is the dreaded discovery of a lump by self-employed Michael's wife, Sharon. It sets in motion quite a chain of events, all within a heartless system. Driven to the brink of sanity when Sharon is denied the expensive treatment she needs, Michael impulsively kidnaps the doctor's daughter, Claire, and hides the child with Ruth, his sister. What follows his subsequent demanding call to the doctor may strain some readers' credulity. Others may find it all too believable. Most will agree, however, that this engrossing page-turner, which flays the world's wealthiest nation for failing to guarantee necessary care for all its citizens, touches our deepest fears. 4.0 out of 5 stars Good book from a man who should publish more often and be much more well-known., Sep 1 2005
By David "Laymon Fan" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Breaking Point (Paperback)

Christopher Fahy is an excellent author. I've read all of his novels and both story collections. I even read his book of poems. (I haven't read his non-fiction yet, though.)

"Breaking Point" is like the best parts of a Peter Abrahams novel. Abrahams writes crime thrillers, and the best parts are often the setup rather than the parts where the guns and knives come out. What I mean is: those parts are fascinating and even suspenseful even without much violence (although the *threat* of violence is there).

This novel by Chris Fahy is like that too.

I hope I'm not making the book sound boring, because it isn't.

It's very suspenseful, and it isn't filled with preachy dialogue. You won't find pages and pages of speeches about the injustice of health care in America.

The suspense comes from a well-drawn group of characters and a good scenario.

I didn't want any harm to come to any of the characters, even the kidnapper. (Well, maybe I wanted the doctor's wife to come to some harm in my darker moments.) I didn't want the victim to get hurt, but I also didn't want the kidnapper to get caught. (I didn't even want the kidnapper's wife to find out the crime even occurred.)

The premise of the novel is that a man and his wife both have lousy health insurance that won't cover a certain cancer treatment for the wife. Out of desperation, the man kidnaps someone and in a sense holds her for ransom.

I don't want to summarize the entire plot and spoil the book. Just get this book and read it.

And, more importantly, get Fahy's books "Nightflyer" and "The Lyssa Syndrome." They're even better. Trample some old ladies and small children if you have to. If they read Fahy's books someday, they'll understand and forgive you.
