Product Description

THE BREAKS is a hip-hop hilarious comedy in the tradition of Friday and Don't Be a Menace to South Central While Drinking Your Juice in the Hood. Mitch Mullany plays Derrick - an Irish white boy who thinks he's black - facing a day in the hood when everything goes wrong. The luck of the Irish doesn't quite seem to work in the hood. With special appearances by basketball great Gary Payton and funk legend George Clinton.

1.0 out of 5 stars 1 word... GARBAGE! Sept. 23 2001
Format:DVD
I love "The Glove" (Gary Payton), but if you wanna break into the movie scene, please avoid STINKERS like this one!
This movie started with an idea and suddenly entered absolute stupid mode! The cause? Somebody forgot to deliver the rest of the script to the friggin director, but hey "we're on a budget so let's just keep filming away while we wait for the rest of the script to arrive"... guess what, "rest of the script" NEVER MADE IT!!
You want black comedy? Pick up some CB4 (only on VHS as I write this), pick up some Original Kings of Comedy, pick up some Def Comedy Jam (there up to 4 volumes on DVD), pick up some Chris Rock: Bring the Pain, pick up some House Party flick, pick up some early Eddie Murphy flicks (Coming to America or Distinguished Gentleman, etc), pick up some... you get my point. Hell, Bulworth was 10 times better than this junk (kind of the same premise, but somewhat smarter, and had a heart).
The Breaks? Nah, it's already broken!

5.0 out of 5 stars Run little Gay Erkel run! Aug. 25 2001
Format:DVD
This movie is urban slapstick at it's best. Just as Friday was, The Breaks is a classic. Although it may never get the props it deserves. I hadn't even heard of this movie, and might not even know about it if I hadn't caught it on at a friends house, she told me it was "really good" so I sat and watched it. She was on point, I am so glad I got exposed to this movie. It's so funny, there were more times then I can remember in it where I was laughing out loud. It's scene after scene of stupid antics & at times gross humor. The scene with the 2 prostitutes had me dying! Mitch Malany is great in it, I think it would have been funny even if a "brother" had played the lead role. The writing is just that good, but the fact it's a white boy in the hood makes it that much better. He pulls off the white who think's he's black role with perfection. I also love how clueless he comes across. The entire cast is funny, and there is definitely chemistry between them. Renaldo Ray as Dereks (Mitch) Uncle, all I can say is wow! I can only hope there is a sequal. Well only if can follow in the steps on this one. I can't see a 2nd one possibly being better, this is one of those movies that was done right in every aspect.

5.0 out of 5 stars Rachel's Opinion! Aug. 16 2000

Hey guys! I was flicking around on the channels when I came across this movie. I had no idea what it was but it caught my attention and I decided to watch it. I thought it was hysterical! The acting was so good and the plot was awesome. Now I missed the beginning maybe half hour to 45 minutes of it but I caught on completely after a few minutes. Mitch Mullany did such a good job in this and he looked very good in it as well! I went online and tried my best to find out what the name of this movie. Reluctantly I did and I hope to own it soon because it is one funny movie! Great job you guys!

5.0 out of 5 stars Unexpectedly Funny! Nov. 27 2002
Format:VHS Tape
My husband caught this on cable late one night and laughed his ... off telling about it the next day. He could barely discribe the "Kill whitey meeting" scene. It sounded so funny that I went out and rented it and I was on the floor the whole time. The only people who wouldn't like this are people who take things too seriously or people who can't get past the main character is white. I did and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I recommend it wholeheartedly. I will be a one woman ad campaign and tell all my peeps about this one. How come no one knows about this movie?

4.0 out of 5 stars The Breaks Aug. 26 2001
Format:DVD
The Breaks is a wonderful movie. I really enjoy comedies, so when I first saw this one it had me rolling. I could not believe how funny it really was. It had good humor from the opening shot, down to the last one. It did not skip a beat. The actors are great. My favorite of the actors had to be the Uncle. Why should that come as any surprise? He is funny in anything that he does. Oh my goodness! The two streetwalkers. I want say more about them, but I will say more in the way that I stongly recommend this picture to anyone who likes to trip out.

5.0 out of 5 stars Oh Shizznittle Aug. 21 2002

I first saw this movie when I was in bed getting ready to fall asleep when i turned to this movie a little past 15 minutes after the start. But from then, I never stopped laughing. It was funny as hell. Then I had to see it again so I went out and rented it, but it wasn't as funny as the first time, maybe cause I wasn't tired, but no matter what, this is one of the funniest movies of all time. ONly problem is I can't find it anywhere except online. But this one will be in my DVD collection.

3.0 out of 5 stars Break it down May 4 2002
Format:DVD
This was a cute movie. Light heartedly spoofs black street culture as seen thru the eyes of a white boy raised by a black family. While this is no "Jerk" it had its funny moments.
A special appearance by funk legend George Clinton in a jailhouse seen that has a cute black knowledge Q&A game show segment.
Many movies are spoofed along the way. Most notably, "Pulp fiction"
Some funny bits, but its no "Friday" with Chris Tucker.
But hey its only 9 bucks, what do you expect?

5.0 out of 5 stars A funny Movie! Jan. 3 2003
Format:DVD
I recommend this to my customers who like "Friday" or "How High".
It is a fast paced comedy about guy who gets kicked out of his house by his mother. The only way she will let him come home is if he can get just one thing right, and that is for him to bring a gallon of milk home. Simple enough, but that's when the fun comes in....
Give "The Breaks" a try, and have a laugh. Don't watch if you are offended by bad lauguage or ranchy humor. :)
