This review is from: Breast Beating: A personal odyssey in the quest for an understanding of breast cancer, the meaning of life and other easy questions (Paperback)
One is first struck by the author's clear simple prose. Secondly by the enormous range of his experiences and lastly by his achievements in his chosen field. Despite the seriousness of his main theme, one is amused by the stories of his family, moved by some of his cases and forced to keep turning the pages. I enjoyed it enormously.

Michael Baum is one of the leading breast cancer surgeons in the world. He is also a humanist, a scholar, and a caring human being.
This book is a personal history of his career achievements, his private and professional battles, and his sense of values.
I loved being in his mind as he wrestled with an understanding of how breast cancer develops and how best to treat it.
I loved his ability to draw on his Jewish background and his exposure to the arts as well as science to deal with the situations he faces as a clinician.
I loved his insights about fractals and his recognizing the similarities between broccoli and breast glandular tissue.
Clear, understandable, two-way communication between healthcare providers and healthcare consumers is a requirement for improved healthcare delivery. This book provides insights into the thinking of a highly qualified, compassionate healer.
I recommend it enthusiastically to everyone who cares.
