Book Description

For more than a decade, BESTFEEDING has been recognized by midwives, doctors, and nursing mothers as the definitive word on breastfeeding. The culmination of 60-plus years of hands-on experience from three dedicated and internationally respected authors, this newly updated classic blends academic knowledge, clinical expertise, and practical skills to educate first-time and experienced mothers alike. Mothers will find precisely the information they need to help their babies grow and thrive-physically and emotionally-as a result of breastfeeding. The book answers all questions a new mother may have, and it is fully illustrated with dozens of helpful photos and drawings that demonstrate all the dos and don'¬?ts of breastfeeding. In addition to the basics, mothers will find tried-and-true solutions to both common and more unusual problems, as well as remedies for babies with special needs. With its sensitive and informed advice, BESTFEEDING is a supportive reminder of what women have always known: that breastfeeding is, quite simply, the best way to nourish a baby.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Book, Jan 13 2007
    By
A reader (Ottawa, Ontario Canada) - See all my reviews
I read this book prior to having my baby and found it to be very informative. Lots of pictures and illustrations to help you learn the proper technique. I still required the help of a lacation consultant but was assured that I had the technique and postioning correct. Some babies just take longer to learn than others. I found the book a good reference for the many questions I had (and still have) about breastfeeding. I have recommended it to friends and family!!

1.0 out of 5 stars Worthless advice -- go see a laction consultant!, Oct 22 2003
    By A Customer
This review is from: Breastfeeding: Getting Breastfeeding Right for You (Paperback)
My wife and I struggled for six weeks with breastfeeding for our first child. We had lots of trouble with the baby latching on. We bought this book and another one and completely absorbed it and followed all their advice and it was of no help at all. In fact, it made it worse because it only enhanced our feeling of hopelessness. Most women would've given up but my wife persevered. In my opinion, the only way to solve your breastfeeding problems is to go see a professional. They don't charge much and you get a 100% customized plan for your personal set of problems. Every woman's body is different, every baby is different and every breastfeeding situation is different. In my opinion, no book with a generic, one-size- fits-all approach is going to work for everybody.

However, beware that not all lactation consultants are the same. If you happen to live in the Washington DC area, one of the very best in this field is Josie at the Northern Virginia Lactation Consultants in Fairfax, VA. After struggling for six weeks with various books and consultants, we finally saw Josie and within two days all our problems were solved!
