Product Description

From Booklist

After waiting nearly four years since The Fiery Cross (2001), readers will find every expectation fulfilled in the sixth book of the popular Outlander series. Gabaldon shines as she unfolds the continuing story of the Frasers, heartbreakingly heroic highlander Jamie and his time-traveling wife Clare. Set during the three years leading up to the American Revolution, this compulsively readable mix of authentically set historical fiction and completely satisfying romance maps both violent loss and strong family ties. On the eve of war much is changing on Fraser's Ridge and Jamie and Claire encounter much harm. This vivid and haunting novel, therefore, brings an aching sadness, but it is balanced with sheer joy, revelation, and solace. The large scope of the novel allows Gabaldon to do what she does best, paint in exquisite detail the lives of her characters. Gabaldon's ability to invoke the heroic and the harrowing writ large, while also creating moments where you dare not take a breath for fear of missing something tiny and fine, is her hallmark. For it is in describing the sound of rain on the roof, Jamie's injured hand, or the understanding between father and daughter that the world of the novel comes alive and offers readers an enthralling experience. Review

“The sixth instalment of the adventures of Claire and Jamie Fraser, already number one on the bestseller list, is a whopping 980 pages of action-packed escapism. It also has surprisingly melancholy and insightful views on the experience of growing old and dealing with the losses that entails…. One of the things that sets Gabaldon apart from other romance writers is exhaustive research of the times in which her characters live, so evident in her attention to period detail…. plot lines and stand-alone yarns are expertly woven together with the overall theme of impending doom and the question of predetermination.” — The Toronto Star

“Fans of Diana Gabaldon’s popular Outlander series have another rousing historical-science-fiction-romance novel to savour in A Breath of Snow and Ashes…. For fans, this book is another slam-dunk hit. It’s a massive, long-lasting source of entertainment.” — The Gazette (Montreal)

5.0 out of 5 stars Jamie and Claire...Extraordinaire!, Oct 25 2005
By
Dee (Nanaimo, BC, Canada) - See all my reviews
A hard to put down novel of exceptional style and rhythym that carries us along this long winding saga of life, death and history. Gabaldon is one of the rare authors today who can weave a tale so vivid and intensely realistic that I often found myself mimicing the casual movements of the characters (e.g.- running a thoughtful knuckle down my nose or brushing my hair from my forehead!) Just like in real life, you will love, hate, pity or root for many of the people that will come into your 'life', for once you begin these books, they really do become another world to escape into. This is a laugh and cry out loud, extremely entertaining journey. NOTE- although it does try and explain, somewhat, the role of the plethora of past characters, I would think that only those readers familiar with this series of books could truly understand 'what is what' and extract the full wonder of the story from these bountiful and wonderful pages. Do yourself a favour and start at Book One: Outlander.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Breath of Snow and Ashes, Oct 24 2005
By
Nancy (windsor ontario) - See all my reviews
This book lived up to all my expectations of what Diana's NEXT book would offer - plenty of excitement, history and the one thing that elevates Diana Gabaldon above the crowd - an excellent story with sympathetic characters who you actually care about, plus a marvelous, engrossing, rich and exciting story. I would recommend that new readers check out the Outlander Series before buying this book, because it is the 6th in the series and newcomers would be a bit confused, but the book is golden. I love it and would not hesitate to recommend it to readers. The entire series is just fantastic and I hated to finish this book. It is the best entertainment, you will learn so much and you will miss Jamie and Claire after reading it!!! Waiting patiently for the next book.... Diana, you rock!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Mad about this book!, Oct 19 2005
By
I loved this book! I laughed, I cried and didn't want it to end. I thought it may have been the best one since Outlander--although I loved all of them. Jamie and Claire are growing older, with all the normal aches and pains--and they are still madly in love! I can't wait until the next book.
