5th and Best,
By
This review is from: Bride by Mistake (Mass Market Paperback)
This is the fifth book in this series, and (unusually for a romance series, as they tend to get repetitive and rely heavily upon previously established characters), it's the best. The hero and heroine are not stereotypical, and interact in a unique and fascinatingly realistic way, without a lot of histrionics, boorish domination, or fake, revisionist "feminism" (wherein the heroine pretends to be wildly independent, but has to constantly be rescued from stupid situations she puts herself into). I would have given this 5 stars, but for the rather abrupt ending.

Two lost souls find love and redemption in the heartwarming historical.,

Bride by Mistake by Anne GracieHistorical Romance Jan. 3rd, 2012 4 stars Bride by Mistake is the fifth in the Devil Riders series about young men who go to war and return changed by the horrors of war. The hero, Luke Ripton is tortured by the death of his dear friend Michael and feels responsible for his death. Luke is handsome as a dark angel and pursued by woman from all high society, but his heart is closed from all feelings. He has a death wish but a heroic act in his youth leaves him some unfinished business. When he was a young, naïve officer, he saved a young thirteen year old Spanish heiress by marrying her with the understanding that the marriage would be later annulled. However, it is years later and his pleas for an annulment have been denied. Although he loathes Spain and the terrible memories there, he is determined to pick up his bride at a simple convent and take her back to England as is his duty. He expects to find a docile young bride eager for his guidance. But instead he finds a head strong woman determined to finish a promise she made to her dying father. Luke finds himself irresistibly drawn to this new Isabella and finding his heart isn't dead after all... Isabella's childhood dreams are suddenly realized when the young and gallant soldier who saved her finally returns. But Luke has changed into a hardened man who merely sees her as a responsibility he does not want. Isabella decides that she must live her own life and that means finding her long lost sister. But the arrogant man she had pinned her affection on is proving to be very difficult and seductive. This is a heartwarming story about two strong characters who slowly transform as a result of meeting each other. Luke realizes that there is more to life than duty and responsibility. And Luke's early autocratic behavior sparks a hidden rebellion and creates a very fiery and self-sufficient Isabella. I liked how her sudden independence and determination gave Isabella a sense of freedom to finally live her own life. Both are very sympathetic characters who have suffered and are finding their way back to themselves. Isabella could be any woman who has done what was expected of her for years and denied her true self. When she realizes that her life has been a lie, she truly lets go and it is exhilarating to see her exuberance. It is this love of life and spirit that attracts Luke. Two lost souls find love and redemption in the heartwarming historical. Reviewed by Steph from Bookaholics Book Club 8 of 9 people found the following review helpful

Library fare. Nothing new here except churros for breakfast.,

At one point in my HR reading life I would actively seek out new Anne Gracie novels. I remember, for example, reading her "Perfect" series and especially liking the first one, The Perfect Rake (Merridew Series). But lately they're a bit been-there, done-that plotwise and even that would be OK in a Regency romance because what really happened during that period in English history except for war with the French and, apparently, really handsome young dukes falling in love with really beautiful upper- or even lower-class women? So the trick of writing a good Regency HR is in the romance and character development. At least Gracie has given us a baron, not a duke, as hero. (Guess the ton ran out of unmarried dukes.) And the heroine is Spanish and attractive rather than beautiful. And the story takes place in Spain. So there we have a bit of deviation from the usual setting and characters. How often does a heroine in an HR have churros with chocolate for breakfast? Unfortunately, this difference is not put to good use. The story, romance and character development is not very good. Everybody is cookie-cutter. Our baron is a whiny, petulant jerk, the heroine is immature, silly and thoughtless. Lust is the only attraction I could find between the two. Who could love either one of them? How could they love each other? And the secondary characters are no better. They're cartoonish in their characterization. Baddies and good folk alike fall on their faces in their flatness. IMO, the love story is unbelievable and the mystery about spies is weak and somewhat silly. Really only a good read for a diehard Gracie fan and even at that it's not worth purchasing. That's what libraries are for. 10 of 12 people found the following review helpful

Anne Gracie is such a great author. I never miss one of her books because she never fails to engage me on every level. I liked that Luke was still kind despite the damage he'd been given during the war. I liked that Isabella holds Luke accountable and stands up for herself. And I love that they heal each other by challenging and supporting one another throughout the book. Keep them coming Anne Gracie!
