3.0 out of 5 stars A mixed bag, as is the norm with this event Jun 10 2012
By Hitmanclark - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
Geoff Johns is arguably the best "big event" writer in comics. From "Infinite Crisis" to "Blackest Night," Johns simply understands the pacing necessary to suck people into an epic summer event.

In "Brightest Day," Johns is at his best and his worst. He shines when writing Aquaman, Martian Manhunter and Firestorm. He manages to make these characters seem both relevant and interesting, a rarity for the first two characters. Yet he devotes much of the time in this volume to Hawkman and Hawkgirl, two characters that, frankly, drag the entire book down around them. Here, Johns' dialogue is forced, his pacing dull and his plot confusing.

The art is strong throughout the book, so don't worry about that. For longtime Hawk fans, perhaps the story works. For me, however, it falls flat there.

Luckily, Johns takes chances in Martian Manhunter's subplot, crafting one of the more interesting J'onn stories in years.

In all, I can't give this book a glowing recommendation, but it's not bad either. Just don't go in with high expectations.

3.0 out of 5 stars More of a build-up to the grand conclusion May 12 2011
By N. Durham - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
The second collected volume of Brightest Day sadly isn't as entertaining as the first, but it stands as a solid and decently entertaining build-up to the grand conclusion of the series, and features possibly the best Aquaman story in eons. Volume 2 of Brightest Day picks up with Martian Manhunter learning that he isn't the last green martian after all, and he sets his sights on his blood-thirsty adversary, while in the meantime, Hawkman continues to search for the kidnapped Hawkgirl. Also in this volume, Aquaman faces off with Black Manta, and a new Aqualad is born as well. There's also some very bad things happening to Firestorm, while Deadman continues to find the "chosen one" with Dove at his side, and even has a meeting with the recently resurrected Batman. Of all the storylines here, the Aquaman one is what stands out the most. Geoff Johns appears to be attempting to work the same kind of magic that he did with Hal Jordan, and while it doesn't have that same kind of effect (nor Aquaman the same kind of appeal), he does a great job regardless. Sadly though, the rest of the stories just aren't all that interesting. The Martian Manhunter and Hawkman/Hawkgirl stories are actually kind of boring, while the Firestorm story doesn't come off as interesting as it should. The other post-Blackest Night resurrected characters, namely Hawk, Maxwell Lord, Zoom, and Captain Boomerang, are either barely featured or not featured at all. I know that they have their own stories going on in other titles, but at the very least their lack of being present is really felt here. The artwork varies, ranging from great to meh, but the included covers are spectacular. All in all, the second collected volume of Brightest Day isn't bad, but it doesn't have the same kind of impact as the first volume. Here's hoping that it manages to pick up more steam as it winds down to its conclusion.

5.0 out of 5 stars "A New Hope" Feb 3 2012
By Gareth Simon - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
This volume collects issues #8-16 of DC Comics `Brightest Day' event.

This volume continues the stories from Volume 1: Hawkman and Hawkwoman discover that the evil priest Hath-Set who originally murdered them in ancient Egypt has been using the remains of their previous incarnations to keep himself alive, and is now allied with Shayera's mother from ancient Egypt, who has been living on another world, from which the Nth metal originally came.

Aquaman and Mera are still struggling against a team of Mera's people, led by her sister, who are trying to kill Aquaman and find the son of Black Manta, the man who killed Aquababy, as he is the key to freeing their people.

J'onn J'onzz tracks down a second surviving Green Martian; and Firestorm is still struggling to control his merger and powers, only to have the Black Lantern version if him - Deathstorm - emerge and steal the White Lantern.

Boston Brand and Hawk and Dove are still searching for the `new hope', and manage to get the White Ring on to Batman for a short time, until the White Pight points out that the new hero will come to them - there is no point in searching for him. Pity it didn't tell them that at the beginning of the series and save a lot of time.

Oh, and Firestorm destroys the universe.

This is a very readable and interesting volume, with a number of secrets revealed about a number of the characters and their history, with very good artwork.

Listmania!
