Adult/High School–As FBI Special Agent Pendergast immerses himself in the investigation of an art critic's bizarre murder, he conjures up clues pointing to the Devil as the culprit. After several killings in the same ghastly manner, similar clues are found. Pendergast teams up with Police Officer Vincent D'Agosta, with whom he had worked in The Relic (St. Martin's, 1996), and they begin a lengthy, intense, and time-driven search for the murderer. Along the way, D'Agosta becomes romantically and professionally attached to New York Police Captain Laura Hayward (Reliquary [Tor, 1998]). Their story runs parallel to the investigation and adds another layer of plot. The peculiar nature of Agent Pendergast, who always seems to get out of any kind of dire straits, complements and contrasts with down-to-earth, practical D'Agosta, and they act as catalysts for one another. The action moves from New York City to Italy and places in between. The authors are especially adept at creepy descriptions of eerily spooky castle ruins, crypts, and grave robberies. Preston & Child have put out some memorable books in the past (Relic, Reliquary, IceLimit were all excellent!). However, they managed to fail miserably in their last 3 books - even though they had a very interesting character, Pendergast, to work with.

BRIMSTONE only barely managed to hold my interest: the plot was stretched-out (the price of sequelization), the villains were obvious and all style, no substance. The side stories were but page-stuffing, they added nothing to the story or the characters' development - whereas, (the partial) catharsis came in the most predictable way possible!!

This is another example of a story diluted to blandness, in order to milk the cash-cow until it bleeds...Disappointed. Again.

This book had so much going for it. From the beginning I was enthralled at what happened and how it happened. As I read more and more I realized that what actually happened seemed more of a cop out then anything else. While I enjoyed reading it (until the last few chapters) it is not the best work of Preston.

This is a a long book,about 700 pages,but definately not boring.I borrowed this book from the library and read it in about 4 or 5 days.That to me means this book more than held my interest.I loved it almost as much as Cabinet Of Curiosities.I also enjoyed Still Life With Crows.All novels with the rather strange but charming Pendergast.Mr eccentric is in top form and the book ends with you dying to read their next thriller Dance with Death.Is agent Pendergast really doomed?or does he dodge death again?
These guys Douglas and Child write a good book.Fans of Pendergast will not want to miss Brimstone.
