Book Description

March 15 2010
Dare to step outside the box. An intimate peek at one family's homeschooling adventure. It all started with her son's shiner...and a feisty science teacher. One quiet afternoon Cassy Knight, a mother of four, is shocked to get a phone call from school. Her eight-year-old son, Jeremy, is accused of starting a fight-and even has a nice-sized shiner to vouch for it. He says he was tired of being called "stupid" over and over by the school bully. Jeremy turns to stare out the window, but Cassy sees a tear spill over and make a trail down his cheek. The next afternoon, nine-year-old Nicole bursts into tears because a teacher laughed at her for believing the story of creation in the Bible. Cassy and her husband, David, grew up in the public school. It's the only way of education that they know. But now they wonder. Is public school really the place where our children should be? That simple question will lead them on a delightful, surprising, and unforgettable journey of discovery. "Wiens provides a thoroughly enjoyable read as she takes her readers through one family's journey from public school to home education." -PAUL D. FARIS, Executive Director and Senior Legal Counsel, HSLDA Canada

Very enjoyable and thought provoking read! Not only is the story line gripping (I stayed up until 2am to finish it the night I started this book), this book also does a great job of presenting a well thought out perspective on 'why homeschooling'.

This is a thoroughly enjoyable book. Mrs. Wiens creates a fictional story using her own personal experience. Anyone who has children is the public school system and is considering homeschool should read this book and be encouraged by the story. Kudos to those who choose to follow their convictions regarding educating their children even though it may go against the "grain"!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Biased Opinion on Home Education April 6 2010

Are our children worth investing our lives into theirs? Do you yearn for a deeper relationship with your kids? Do you wonder what they are thinking but don't have the time to discover their loves and longings? Is family high on your priority list? Do you want them to grow up like you? Do you want them to treasure a faith in a living loving Saviour and King? Why would a family choose to live on a one parent income? Is the huge commitment worth it. You better believe it. Whether you decide to investigate the opportunity of home education or not you will be challenged with our responsibility as parents to bring up our children in the nurture and admonition of the LORD and to pass God's blessing on to others. For those already in the biblical homeschooling community it will be an encouragement to you and a tool to give to others to help them understand why we do what we do. I've watched the author's labour of love. She has lived this journey. I've observed the many hours the author has poured into the pages of this book to challenge you with the value of your family. She's my wife. Buy the book. It's an investment. You won't regret it!Bringing Them Home

I found this story to be quite enjoyable. It covered many areas that a first time homeschooler may experience. I would recommend that you read this story for inspiration at the beginning of your journey.
5.0 out of 5 stars bringing them home Feb. 19 2011

I am so excited to share this next book with you. Bringing them home is a novel about the Knight family's decision to homeschool their 4 children and highlights of that first years journey. This book is a novel with the Knight family as the main characters, but I have no doubt there are real families out there with similar experiences as this book describes.
Author Elizabeth Wiens is the very talented co-author of Destined for Eternity, served full time with Child Evangelism Fellowship for 16 years and now ministers with GoodSeed Canada. Mother of 4 girls and homeschooling veteran herself, this novel is a reflection of her own families homeschooling journey. She has done an absolute fantastic job in describing the feelings, uncertainties, strengths and passion of many homeschooling families today.
This book can serve many purposes. Most books out there about homeschooling are informational only and in short can be technical and boring. Since written in novel form, Bringing them home is not only informational, but also encouraging, engaging, personal and interesting to read. In fact, I had a hard time putting it down. What a great tool for first year homeschoolers, rewarding for veteran homeschoolers like myself, and thought provoking for those considering homeschooling or have friends or family who homeschool.
I have personally started a collection of books to give my children when they become adults and have children of their own. Bringing them home is a must have in this collection. I also plan to share this book with friends who homeschool and will most definitely recommend it to those contemplating homeschool or those who find themselves in the first year possibly uncertain of success. Look for the sequel, which will follow the Knight family through the teen years and courtship.
Elizabeth, I would really love to know the name of some of the curriculum resources the Knight family used for homeschooling.
I leave you with one of my many favorite passages of Bringing them Home.
"Why are you angry? I have entrusted these children into your care and ask that you raise them for Me, both for their sakes and for My glory. They are all that you have that is eternal, and I am not asking you to do the impossible. Remember, I will go with you.
Cassey sucked in her breath and looked around the room as if to expect to see someone standing beside her bed, but no one was there. With a shock she realized that the words she'd heard in her heart were true. To train her children for God's glory was the most awesome task God could ever give her. Was she willing to give it her best effort? Suddenly this whole dilemma was not just about the public school vs. the christian school or homeschooling, but about obedience to what God may be directing her to do. How could she best honor God and train up her children for Him, and was she willing to do it?"
5.0 out of 5 stars Thankful Feb. 9 2011

I'm thankful that Mrs. Wiens has written this book. It quickly and pleasantly gives the reader a feel for why a Christian might choose to homeschool and what homeschooling is actually like on a day-to-day basis. I think this is the perfect book to give to your friends or family who are curious or skeptical about homeschooling, or to a new or potential homeschooler who is feeling unsure and insecure about the whole thing. But since this is an entertaining and easy-to-read novel, I'm also thinking of giving it out to friends and neighbors who have no interest at all in homeschooling at this point. It's a good way to say, "Here--I have something for you that will help you understand a little more about what my life is like." Looking forward to the sequel!
5.0 out of 5 stars A must read for any new Home schooling family! June 24 2010

Bringing Them Home was a great read! As a new home schooling mom, I was able to take a peek into the life of another home schooling family, one that is just now feeling the call to pull their children out of public education.

Cassy Knight faces a whirlwind of emotions when she feels God calling her to make the transition to teaching her children at home, and when she decides to heed his voice, both she and her family are greatly rewarded! Full of fun ideas for home schoolers and an informative array of great books and resources, Bringing Them Home is an encouragement to any mother, father or family who wants to know what home schooling is all about and what to excpect from a balanced, fun, laid back autmosphere of teaching your children at home. It proves that you don't have to be perfect and you don't have to be an expert to have the heart and will to guide your children's education, you just need the right attitude and an adventurous spirit! I'm definitely looking forward to the sequel, that will follow the Knight family through the teen years!
