Product Description

From Library Journal

This detailed volume is the first catalog in 65 years of the 168 British paintings at the Huntington Library Art Collection and Botanical Gardens in San Marino, CA. All the paintings are cataloged with standard information; 123 of them also receive a fuller discussion that includes information about the artist, the painting's provenance, exhibitions at which it was shown, and technical details about its physical condition sometimes with illustrations. This is followed by information about the subject whether portrait or landscape in as full and scholarly a manner as could be desired. The entries abound with full-scale footnotes. The quality of the photographs throughout is superb, as is the scholarship. Fully and carefully indexed, the work also includes Bennett's well-written and informative essay, "The Formation of Henry E. Huntington's Collection of British Paintings." This is a splendid scholarly achievement not likely to be superseded as well as a beautifully produced volume that is a joy to use. Editor and catalogers are to be congratulated on a book that belongs in most libraries. Martin Chasin, Adult Inst., Bridgeport, CT

I had a wonderful experience with my purchase. The product arrived ahead of the projected timeline and the "used" book was in excellent condition. I am very happy with my puchase.

5.0 out of 5 stars noted and encyclopedic collection of earlier British painting, Dec 27 2009
By Ivor E. Zetler - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: British Paintings at the Huntington (Hardcover)
There were four main characters involved in the establishment of the Huntington art collection. Firstly there was Collis Huntington (1821-1900), a railroad pioneer who established the family fortune. He was married to Arabella (1850-1924); after his death she married his nephew Henry (1850-1927). Henry Huntington was the initial collector, although Arabella became an equally avid enthusiast in the acquisatory habit. The fourth personality was Joseph Duveen, the legendary art dealer. It is estimated that between 1908 and 1917 Henry and Arabella spent the equivalent of $360,000,000 (1990 dollar value)purchasing art and decorative art through Duveen. This included Gainsborough's iconic "The Blue Boy". Good customers indeed! Read Meryle Secrest's fascinating book "Duveen" for an insight into the Huntington's dealings with Duveen.

This weighty book is a catalog of the British paintings located in the Huntington Library. They include all of the familiar names such as Constable, Reynolds, Gainsborough, Romney and Lawrence. There are also a host of more minor artists, whose creations are of a variable standard. There are 120 catalogue entries and each painting is comprehensively described. Apart from a few horses by Stubbs and landscapes by Turner and Constable, the paintings are primarily portraits. Apart from the interest in examining the works, the collection gives a useful and generally high quality overview of British art to around 1800. Printing and reproduction quality are highly satisfactory.
