Broken Voices is an absorbing read with strong character development. The chapter prologues set the scenes and you are moved quickly into their lives, all the while feeling connected, concerned, and somehow leery because of the lurking secrets of the past. Despite the dark undercurrents, the tone is anything but glum; rather, you quickly realize that although what happened left casualties, others have survived, resurfaced, and reinvented their lives. The reader is given just enough information; there is no excess, no dwelling on purient details. For the most part, the author indicates, rather than delineates, and leaves much to the reader's interpretation. Despite the darkness, the reader knows that although tragedy has broken some voices, hope and love have given others the strength to have their voices heard. Finely written, absorbing, a truly fine read from a first time novelilst!
