About the Author
Frederick Manfred was born on a farm in northwest Iowa in 1912, and received his early education in country schools. He graduated from Calvin College in Michigan. His first novel, The Golden Bowl (1944) received widespread critical acclaim, and launched a literary carerr that included over 30 novels and collections. In 1967 Manfred was awarded the Distinguished Achievement Award from the Western Literature Association. Manfred died in 1994 in Luverne, Minnesota.
