Great Performances, Incredible Transfers,
By
This review is from: Bruch, Mendelssohn: Violin Concertos; Bach: Double Concerto (Audio CD)
This Avid CD contains three great violin concertos, played by Yehudi Menuhin when he was very young. The Bach 2 violin concerto was recorded in 1931 when he was 15 (!), the Bruch in 1932, and the Mendelssohn in 1938. All are beautifully played. The real shocker with this disc is how good these old recordings sound. Having previously given 5 stars to historic recordings on Naxos and Dutton, the sound from Avid should really rate 6 stars. The inevitable hiss is virtually non-existent, even with in-the-ear headphones. The violin jumps out with incredible clarity and vitality. If you're interested hearing these pieces played with grace, authority and intensity by Mehuhin, this is the CD to get.
