Review

Acclaim for A Brush with Death

“Duncan is a born storyteller whose ability to create appealing characters, evoke a strong sense of place, and fashion a clever plot are accompanied by another gift: a faculty for writing flawlessly smooth prose. A Brush with Death is a close encounter with talent.”—Richmond Times-Dispatch

“Duncan’s second is every bit as delightful as her debut…a smoothly written classic English mystery right up there with the best.”—Kirkus Reviews

“Duncan spends time developing the personal lives of her appealing main and secondary characters, and it is their relationships that provide much of the novel’s appeal, along with the well-realized Welsh setting and the many details about running a small business. Readers who enjoy the English village cozy mysteries of Dorothy Cannell and Nancy Atherton will want to take a look at this series.”—Booklist

“Absorbing.”—Publishers Weekly

“Duncan writes so well about the lives of people in a small village in Wales that the reader becomes immersed in their daily trials and tribulations…sure to appeal to fans of M.C. Beaton and Agatha Christie.”—Library Journal

Praise for The Cold Light of Mourning

A gentle delight…sure to please fans of the classic English mystery.”—Kirkus Reviews

“A runaway bride is the linchpin of Canadian writer Duncan’s delightful debut...The scenic Welsh backdrop, village personalities and a budding romance for Penny add color and interest.” —Publishers Weekly

“Admirable and appealing...combines a worthy plot, a congenial heroine and a sure sense of place—Duncan’s depiction of village life is spot-on—to produce a story that nears perfection. Readers will want to see more of Penny—and more of Duncan’s pleasing prose.”—Richmond-Times Dispatch

“Duncan lulls readers with her soothing prose and depiction of small-town life in Wales and then startles them with a shocker of a denouement. Readers who enjoy Louise Penny, another Canadian mystery author of note, and Charlaine Harris’s Aurora Teagarden mysteries will love this one.”—Library Journal

“Well-developed characters and a nicely delineated Wales setting are what make this stylish cozy work.”—Booklist

“[S]torytelling with polished exposition, pacing and edgy dialogue. Characters sparkle, and the dark side that lurks just at the edge of most innocent scenes is drawn with skill and depth. A must-read.”—Hamilton Spectator

Product Description

When Penny moves to her cottage in the small Welsh town of Llanelen and begins sorting through the belongings of her benefactor, a deceased teacher, she comes upon a packet of love letters from a promising young Liverpool artist named A. Jones. An artist herself, Penny sets out to discover more about this mysterious painter who met a tragic end in an accident in 1970.

While at a retrospective art exhibition in Liverpool, Penny recognizes what she believes to be a watercolor painted by Jones. But it is attributed to another artist. Helped once more by a small group of townsfolk, including her enterprising business partner, Victoria Hopkirk, Penny sets out to prove her suspicion that art theft is at the heart of the case, and that Jones’s death was no accident.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Penny for Your Thoughts, Oct 2 2010

The two Penny Brannigan detective novels written by Elizabeth J. Duncan are treats for the reader. I just finished reading the second and enjoyed it thoroughly. The plots are easy to follow. There are off-beat characters ranging from the detective, Penny, who is a manicurist, to Victoria, her harp-playing sleuthing partner. The writing is a bit stilted as are the conversations. But the core of these books lies in the creation of the Welsh village and countryside. The descriptions are beautiful and make the reader who has never been to Wales, wish to go there. There is also an underlying theme: the importance of relationships. In Llanelen's quiet community, social lives are explored. The happiest relationships belong to the minister and his wife, lesbian partners, and an elderly patriarch who outlives his beloved wife. The single women have a pretty good community too, with plenty of time for cozy dinner parties, gatherings at the pub, and yes, manicures!

5.0 out of 5 stars an artist's tale in Wales, Jan 2 2012

I read all 3 mysteries by Elizabeth J. Duncan so far and liked this one the best. They are all worth reading, but I suggest reading them in order (this would be the second one). In any case, reading this one prior to A Killer's Christmas in Wales will bring more pleasure when reading that one. In A Brush With Death, we become familiar with Penny Brannigan and understand her motivation for settling in Wales, and we also meet the characters who will reappear in A Killer's Christmas, so it's useful to have that background. This book moves more quickly than the others and has more suspense, in my opinion. Relationships between Penny and her colleague Victoria, as well as other townspeople, are very well-expressed, and there is even a cute little dog (Robbie) who enters the scene. Ms. Duncan describes the scenery of Wales beautifully and with an artistic sense of color, which is a pleasure to read, and there is also quite a bit of history in the story to this one. It's all very well-done and will probably appeal to cozy readers who like the setting in Wales. The story is quite original too.

4.0 out of 5 stars Hard To Read With Too Many Words, Nov 1 2011
By Kathryn Smith "Kathryn Smith" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: A Brush with Death (Mass Market Paperback)
As a professional artist, I was delighted when my mother gave me this book to read. We like sharing good books to read, especially mystery stories. "A Brush With Death" & Penny Brannigan, another mystery to be told.

When I started reading the story, it was as if I was being led by a tour guide instead of being able to immerse myself into the book's setting, heroine, storyline. Perhaps the writer's style of writing a mystery story gave me trouble, though I did try to reread the story again.

The style of writing, sentance structure, choice of words, use of passive language, sentances are too long, disjointed. A few changes, reworking of sentances, paragraphs, dropping the use of certain words, making the language more active, giving the writing "flow" would make this mystery series a winner.

Drop over-use of "it", "that", "had," etc.

My apologies if I offended anyone. In my office working years I learned to write magazine articles, show catalog entries & news press releases from a supervisor who was like a marine drill instructor. It made me a better writer.
