Humorous, and most importantly, Balanced!, Aug 6 2009
This review is from: Rick and Bubbas Guide to the Almost Nearly Perfec (Paperback)
Put away those mushy-gushy marriage guides... the real stuff's right here! Alright, maybe not all of it, but Rick & Bubba have a few things to say about getting married, being married, and staying married. And it won't put you to sleep! Rick & Bubba approach the subject with honesty, humor, and personal anecdotes that will make you either laugh or groan (depending on how much you identify with said anecdote...!) What I appreciated most about this book was the different approach to the subject, which I realize is something that a number of other reviewers found frustrating. Let me put it this way: the authors don't shy away from taking shots at their wives. Not in a cruel or mean way, but in the sense that the anecdotes don't always make their wives into the "good guy" of the situation. They show their faults, their bad habits, all those things that... well... that husbands are always pinned for in other marriage books! That's not to say Rick & Bubba make themselves out to be perfect, model husbands - not in the least! But the tongue-in-cheek, BALANCED approach to showing both good/bad sides of husbands and wives, in a humorous way, was incredibly refreshing. It's about time we wives had some stories told about us!

Humorous but hokey, July 23 2009
This review is from: Rick and Bubbas Guide to the Almost Nearly Perfec (Paperback)
Good marriage advice is hard to come by, and it's even harder to come by in this book. Although touted as a guide to avoid the pitfalls of marriage, this book hardly delivers. I expected something humorous yet honest. Rather this book just seems silly and it's hard to tell whether the authors are being sarcastic or truly giving advice on how to get out of cleaning the kitchen. I would even suggest that seriously following the advice in this book may contribute to marriage problems because their view on marriage roles reinforces gender stereotypes. For example, women should just face certain facts: when men are ill, their wives don't take care of them, but when wives are ill, the husbands better wait hand and foot or suffer the consequences. These guys have a radio show and that may be funny but writing a silly book about marriage doesn't count as giving good advice. I'm guessing the type of man they are catering to doesn't read books anyway. They portray men as sports junkies, pot-bellied, cleaning-averse, and irresponsible. They portray women as chatterboxes, control freaks, and anal retentive. They warn future husbands to expect to never be allowed to pick out furniture or paint color - sorry but many wives are not this controlling and to portray them all like that is just annoying. There's a difference between giving genuinely sound advice with humous illustrations and being hokey. This is the latter.

Marriage advice from a guy's point of view, July 15 2009
This review is from: Rick and Bubbas Guide to the Almost Nearly Perfec (Paperback)
Rick and Bubba, the "sexiest fat men in America" have their own unique style when it comes to talking about marriage. Taking stories and incidents from their combined Thirty-three years of marriage, these two men want to show the world how to have a great marriage (because no marriage is perfect), and have a lot of fun along the way. Rick and Bubba do have a lot of fun, sometimes at the expense of their wives. When I read the description of this book, I was intrigued. After reading, I didn't find the book as helpful as I thought it would be. I was not familiar with Rick and Bubba before reading the book, and so did not know what kind of comedy would be found between the covers. I found some of their comments and stories a little demeaning, and not really helpful. To be fair, some of the chapters had really good lessons mixed in with all the comedy. This book is great for anyone looking for a good laugh or needing some fun advice to give to someone. The book was definitely written from a man's point of view, and I think that my brother or father would really enjoy it.
