Armstrong's research on Buddhism in Japan,

Although this book was written in the last century it is the result of prolonged residence and research in Japan by a reputable scholar who wrote several books on religion in Japan including Light From The East, a study of Confucianism in Japan. The research on Buddhism in Japan needs to be suppemented by more recent research but the findings in the early Twentieth Century provide a solid base for understanding more recent developments in the subject.
