The Buddies puppies are back for another adventure, and this time the talking bundles of golden fur find themselves right in the middle of a Halloween scare that started way back in 1937. Fernfield legend tells of an evil warlock, Warwick, who entered into a pact with the menacing Halloween Hound to open a portal between realities and allow the spirits of the netherworld to escape and take over the world. Time ran out before the Halloween Hound could steal the souls of five dogs of the same blood in order to open the portal. But conditions are just right in the present for Warwick the Warlock and the Halloween Hound to return and complete their mission. The Buddies stumble into the middle of Warwick's plan and suddenly find themselves the town's only hope, along with a puppy ghost from the past named Pip, their new clairvoyant friend Zelda, and a young boy grown old. Young audiences find these cute talking puppies quite appealing, but the whole premise of ghosts and dark spirits from the underworld is potentially quite frightening to some. Additionally, some viewers may be surprised by the film's portrayal of the church as a safe sanctuary from dark spirits and the Bible as a powerful weapon to be brandished in the face of evil. While this fifth Buddies movie is just as cute as and no less believable than the previous films, the writers have chosen to treat the puppies more as one cohesive group rather than as individuals with distinct personalities, and the plot is certainly much scarier than in earlier films. What hasn't changed is the message that teamwork and confidence triumphs over evil. Bonus features include a tour of Rosebud's house, a "Monster Mash" music video featuring the cast of Shake It Up, and a sneak peak of Treasure Buddies. (Ages 6 and older) --Tami Horiuchi

4.0 out of 5 stars Got to love them dogs~!, Nov 25 2011
This review is from: Spooky Buddies - DVD (DVD)
I thought this was a great movie and my children loved watching it, however, I must admit, if your children fear easily, then you may wish to stay away from this one. The Hell Hound can be very scary at times and there are many ghosts and demons throughout the story. My children are not sensitive to such and they have been recommending to everyone.

I thought the dogs were delightful, as always. Their costumes were just too cute and I can understand why they had to sit through most of their scenes in this movie versus their others. It could get mighty stressful having to keep the costumes on the dogs if they had to do more aerobatic moves.

I thought the character of Warwick was a little overacted and it would be my only bad report to say about the movie. I loved his minion, Hoot and how he interacted with his master. I also thought Deidrich Bader did a great voice over, one could hardly place his voice as you were listening!

All of us jumped up and danced to the Monster Mash, my little guy has such a silly air guitar dance that he does. It was too cute. It was agreed that this was one of the favourite parts of the movie.

I enjoyed this movie and would suggest you keep it in mind for your upcoming Hallowe'en holidays...or just to have around, even though it is Hallowe'en, the story has a Christian back story feel to it that will be sure to delight.

5.0 out of 5 stars awsome, Oct 15 2011
By
This review is from: Spooky Buddies - DVD (DVD)
Parents need to know that this entry in the Buddies series is intended as a humorous Halloween scare fest for kids. Though lighthearted and far-fetched overall, there are still many scenes that might be too frightening for the youngest audiences. this is a spooky story with lots of dark, ominous music and special effects, as well as two villains who are sinister evil-doers bent on power and mischief. The beloved "buddies" and their child companions are in exaggerated danger throughout. They're chased, threatened, captured, turned to stone, and, in some cases, they vanish. There are also pratfalls, visits to a graveyard, a haunted house, black cats, rats, zombies, flying villains, explosions, and fires. Some potty humor, too.
