Ry Cooder's name has helped bring attention to this session, but it's the veteran Cuban son musicians who make this album really special. Reminiscent of Ellington in its scope and sense of hushed romanticism, Buena Vista Social Club is that rare meld of quietude and intensity; while the players sound laid-back, they're putting forth very alive music, a reminder that aging doesn't mean taking to bed. Barbarito Torres's laoud solo on "El Cuarto de Tula" is both more blinding and more tasteful than any guitar showcase on any recent rock album; a quote from "Stormy Weather" and some very distinct parallels to Hawaiian styles remind us of why it's called "world music." --Rickey Wright

5.0 out of 5 stars Cuban Music Like Mama Used To Make April 28 2004
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
I happen to come across this cd by sheer luck. It is the best cd that I have purchased to date. I mixes latin jazz, big band and ballroom music all together. There are several fun songs with a deep routed soul that I thought had been lost. Even if you do not understand spanish this is a wonderful treasure to have in your collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars Inspiring, emotionally engaging, full of life ! Jan 20 2004

Format:Audio CD
Even as a relative new acquaintance to Cuban music, it was not hard to hear the sheer genius and power of the sounds, the music and the experience. This group of musicians have very touching stories in every sense, how they strived to achieve excellence in utter poverty, how fate brought them together, how most of the world almost missed noticing the contribution of these artists to the music of the 20th Century. Despite their struggles, the music that you will hear on in this collection is in as pristine as mountain snow, in its own sense. A wonderful blend of Salsa and Mambo and Jazz and blues - will appeal equally to all audiences.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Cuban music for starters Nov 28 2004
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
This CD is so mesmerizing that you cannot stop listening to it even after you've stopped the CD. The more you listen to it, the more you realize what really music is all about. Comparing this CD with other genre of music is not a smart thing to do. If you don't like it, you don't like it. But that doesn't mean it is bad music.
