Product Description

Product Description

It’s Christmas Eve in sleepy little Gambier, Ohio, and a massive snowstorm is giving the rural town more than just a white Christmas. Roads are closed, everything is shut down, and the monster outside is angry, rattling the windows and howling in the chimney.

Harry Ryan, a sophomore at the college there, decided to stay at school over winter break to finish his term paper, but it’s not going well, and now he regrets the decision that left him stranded so far from his family on such an important occasion. You see, as well as being Christmas, December 25th is also Harry’s birthday.

As he looks out his window at the stark and beautiful campus, at the icicles on the bushes along Middle Path, and the snow pasted on the windward sides of trees, and the layers of vanilla icing covering the world’s chocolate cake, it reminds him of a Christmas a long time ago.

Buffalo Nickel Christmas is the story of that special day. It begins with an ordinary boy in an ordinary world, but as a monster storm approaches, and Christmas Eve finally arrives, the boy discovers that he is anything but ordinary, and that the world is a very magical place indeed.

You will meet some unusual people in this story, and hear unbelievable things. You might even see a wizard and a king or two. Sixteen forevers will pass in this book. That’s a very long time, and many magical things can happen when it’s sixteen forevers and still no Christmas. Whatever you do, don’t listen to that little voice inside your head that tells you it’s illogical, that it doesn’t make sense. Listen for the whistling teakettle and be ready with your wish.

5.0 out of 5 stars A New Bit of Magic for Christmas Nov. 29 2011
By Merlyn - Published on
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
When reading this book, those of us who have reached a certain age will feel the wash of warm nostalgia for Christmases of our childhood. We'll remember sights, and scents as the great day approaches--all too slowly. Larry Enright has masterfully captured the feelings of children at Christmastime in days gone by.

Enright could've left the book as a period piece, a remembrance of home scenes with the new Sears Roebuck catalog "Wish Book"; waiting for the monster snow storm to seal kids in, away from school and Dad home from work. He could've simply left us with the enchantment of huge department stores in the Christmas shopping season with their displays and of course, Santa. In doing so, he would've had a good book.

Instead, he chose to weave a new, special bit of magic. He has created a fresh myth. A new world for children and adults with people and creatures we've never met. "Buffalo Nickel Christmas" deserves to take its place on bookshelves and in the dreams of all who love Christmas. Highly recommended for all!

5.0 out of 5 stars Time Travel to Christmas Past Dec 5 2011
By Jason McIntyre - Published on
With stories like this one, I can see why Larry Enright has a bestseller on his hands. Buffalo Nickel Christmas is such an approachable, easy-to-know book, the kind that gets into your heart even if you're like me. That is, you're not sure you have one. What I loved here was the ambling way he brings readers into the hopes and lives of the gang of kids and their parents. Though younger than the characters in Buffalo Nickel Christmas by a generation or so, the story's resonance remains strong, even for me. Enright's power as a writer is in yanking me back into similar memories of my own childhood Christmases. It's like therapeutic time travel for the soul. And what a glorious Christmas gift that is!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Magic Of Christmas In A New Classic Nov. 23 2011
By Garrity Graves - Published on
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Christmas isn't about presents in this fun and feel-good tale. With echoes of 'Wizard Of Oz' and a hint of 'Harry Potter', we're taken on a journey of hope and adventure as Harry Ryan chooses to believe in magic, and in doing so saves all that is perfect and wonderful about the season.

This is a story that young and old can embrace, and if you've ever dreamed of or truly experienced a Christmas Miracle, this tale is for you.

5.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful, magical Christmas story! Dec 5 2011

Great little Christmas read! A fun and magical Four Years From Home Spinoff told from young Harry Ryan's POV. This one should be one your shelf and featured during the season... Drink with hot chocolate topped with marshmallows! A great addition to the Ryan legacy!

4.0 out of 5 stars Magical! Dec 8 2012
By Kate - Published on

A young man remembers the Christmas he turned 6. A huge snowstorm, brothers and sisters making a snow castle (as well as telling Dad what they want from the Sears Gift Book), a trip to a department store's 'Christmas Village', a mysterious stranger, and more combine to bring the protagonist (Harry) face-to-face with . . . Santa Claus?
This book started off well (set in 1956) and I enjoyed getting to know Harry and his family. However, the middle of the book is where it really took off for me. Pure magic! I also loved the way the author reminded us that the important things at Christmastime aren't the things we give . . . but the memories we make.
