Wireless and other problems,
By Bob McKercher (Toronto) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Buffalo Technology AirStation High Power N300 Gigabit Wireless Router & AP WZR-HP-G300NH (Black) (Personal Computers)
The version of this router now being sold is WZR-HP-G300NH2. Owners of this model are reporting multiple problems in the Buffalo tech forums at [...]I have been using mine for almost a week now and it keeps dropping wireless connections. Others are reporting the same problem in the forum. Wired connectivity is working well, but there is a report in the forum from somebody saying they are having problems connecting to a PPOE (e.g. Bell telephone line) service. Maybe this will be fixed with a new firmware update, but right now (October 2011) this should be a red light for anybody considering this router for wireless connectivity. Edited - November 6, 2011.... I've now returned the router to Amazon (kudos for your return policy guys) and bought a different make and model from them. I was enthusiastic about DD-WRT, but there are too many problems that are not made clear in the information provided here, or on the Buffalo site... 1. Keeps dropping wireless connections - several times a day in some cases. There is a third party hack in the Buffalo forums for this, but if this were a good solution, why didn't Buffalo implement it or at least document it? 2. The USB port does not work under DD-WRT. This is only made clear in an insert inside the box. On the box there is the claim that the router supports USB storage. Inside the box there is an insert that says only multifunction printers are supported. 3. Incoming and Outgoing logging does not work under DD-WRT. This is an important line of defense against attacks. 4. You cannot turn off the radio under the DD-WRT interface. Not good. 5. Amazon should update its information to make it clear that the model being shipped is not the WZR-HP-G300NH, but the newer WZR-HP-G300NH2. If you are buying this router for its support of DD-WRT or for wireless connection, these are things you need to know.

Excellent Gigabit, DD-WRT compatible router,
By D2007 "Dan" (Toronto, Canada) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Buffalo Technology AirStation High Power N300 Gigabit Wireless Router & AP WZR-HP-G300NH (Black) (Personal Computers)
I've had different Linksys, ASUS, D-Link routers in the past and all of them were very good for the time. So, I wanted to upgrade to a gigabit router..I have chosen this router as it was the best price/performance ratio for a Gigabit router (I paid $85). It has Atheros chipset (AR9132), 64 MB RAM and 32MB flash. This is quite good compared to other, more expensive routers. It also has one USB port which can be used for a shared network disk OR a network printer. Another feature that I was looking for, was that the router firmware can be upgraded to DD-WRT firmware (free). If you are not familiar with DD-WRT, let me just say that with this firmware you can turn any basic router to a $$$ router. I was pleasantly surprised to find out that Buffalo officially supports DD-WRT. Way to go Buffalo! I upgraded it with standard DD-WRT firmware (not Buffalo branded version) and all seems to be working OK so far. Make sure you get the Buffalo ..G300NH version and NOT regular ...G300N version from DD-WRT site. After using it for a few months, I can say that Wireless performance is great, signal is strong, and router is more responsive than routers I had in the past. Overall, I am happy with my purchase.
