Product Description

From Amazon.com

While the idea of infusing a weekly TV series with a Broadway musical ethos isn't exactly a new one--think Randy Newman's ambitious Cop Rock--it became something of a turn-of the-century television mini-trend. But few have reached as far--or succeeded--like this November 2001 episode of Fox Network's Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Penned by series creator-producer Josh Whedon and performed by Sarah Michelle Gellar and cast, it's a loving, loopy musical pastiche that takes potshots at everything from Andrew Lloyd Webber to alt-rock. Paralleling the show's lovable pop culture tweaking, the musical styles here (the episode's musical conceit is a curse visited upon Buffy's hometown of Sunnydale) range from a patent footlight chorus of demons being interrupted by Gellar's hard-rocking stake thrusts on "Going Through the Motions" to Spike the Vampire's goth-metal complaint "Rest in Peace," with everything from parking tickets and mustard stain removal to climactic duels with the supernatural getting the Broadway send-up. Also includes strong orchestral score-suites from three other episodes, as well as Whedon and wife Kai Cole's demo for "Something to Sing About." --Jerry McCulley

5.0 out of 5 stars Witty, catchy, and fun!, Jan 8 2003
This review is from: Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Once More with Feeling (Musical Episode) (Audio CD)
I am a Buffy fan, and like most, loved this episode - so I'm biased -- but I really love having this soundtrack! There are a lot of really fun numbers in many musical styles. "Under Your Spell" is, to me, the breakout song that I can't get out of my head. The lyrics throughout are clever and witty, sometimes self-referential ("I think this line is mostly filler"). If you're a Buffy fan, you'll probably love this cd.

If you're not a Buffy fan... well, know going in that these aren't (for the most part) trained singers, and there are times you'll cringe because of that. On the positive side, they're all giving thier all and very committed to their characters. I agree with what others have said, it would help if you've seen the episode (or read the script, which is published and also well worth having for Buffy fans!). The instrumental pieces from other episodes, particularly "Hush", are outstanding and require no knowledge of the show to appreciate.

If you like fun, catchy musicals, especially campy/fun ones like "Bat Boy" or "Little Shop of Horrors", you'll likely really enjoy this cd.

This is a great CD. Even my friends who have never seen Buffy before love the music. You'll really love the songs. They are funny, some romantic, and some are just coversations. Its a real good mix of music. From the great musical episode we all loved, you get all of the songs. Enjoy it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Once More, With Feeling = Definitely Worth It, Dec 23 2002

I must say, this is probably one of the items in my Buffy collection I treasure the most. I LOVED the episode, and I was ultimately stoked when I discovered there was going to be a soundtrack. Naturally, I snapped it up the first day it arrived in stores. ;) It's a must-buy for any Buffy fan. Even if you're not a Buffy fan, any musical-lover will love this. I even find my college roommate humming a couple of tunes from it once in awhile, which she always denies - even she likes it, and sadly, I can't get her to understand the joys of the Buffyverse. *sigh* Anyway. Back to the review.

The fact that Joss Whedon was not credited with an Emmy nomination for this work is an insult. Of course, the Emmy people said they fixed it, blah blah, but whatever. The fact that he wrote all of the songs make it even more special. The man is definitely multi-talented - he even lends a bit of his voice to the final track.

However, it is the cast's voices that shine on this cd. Amber Benson and James Marsters in particular were gifted with fabulous, amazing PIPES. They make me wish Amber had a cd and I got to go a Ghost of the Robot concert once in awhile. Sarah Michelle Gellar and Anthony Stewart Head also give notable performances, and the rest of the cast isn't half-bad, either. The best song is probably "Walk Through the Fire", which includes all of the cast, plus Broadway alumni Hinton Battle.

The disc also includes some extra instrumentals, such as the tracks "Sacrifice" from "The Gift" - which always makes me cry - and the excellent suites from Emmy award-nominated "Hush" and season four finale "Restless".

All in all, it's a fabulous compilation. Five out of five stars, all the way.
