This graphic novel completes my collection of Buffy The Vampire Slayer's eighth season - at least until season nine comes along.

3.0 out of 5 stars Moments of brilliance but still a big mess Sep 18 2011
By Kid Kyoto - Published on Amazon.com

After 8 volumes and 1000 pages of story Buffy's 8th season finally lurches to a close with this book.

Nearly all the major characters from the original series play a role and there is the obligatory death. There's some good scenes and occasionally snappy dialogue. But the story is still a big mess.

Things happen for no real reason, except maybe because it would be cool. Everything just seems half-baked and half explained. Which is not too surprising since Jos Whedon is occupied by other projects and surely cannot give this his full attention.

Whedon seems to understand this and in an unusual afterword explains that Season 9 will be more down to Earth and more of a return to the spirit of the show.

It was a fun ride and this is a decent enough conclusion, but in the end it's still a mess.

3.0 out of 5 stars Needs to get back to its roots Oct 12 2011

I loved Buffy the vampire slayer, so I was intrigued to pick up a copy of this graphic novel edition of the continuation of Buffy's story. The story is fairly light and involves an end of the world scenario which can only be prevented by Buffy and her pals. The execution however felt at times a bit overkill, especially at the beginning.

First, I felt the art and pencils were pretty good. The artwork and painted covers is overall top notch. I only noticed a few pencil inconsistencies. The colors were well-painted and vivid.

The story felt at times a bit fantastic for me to fully enjoy. What I liked about Buffy- the humor and relationships was still there, but some elements (the alien/demons in particular), just seemed on the corny side. I think what I like about Buffy is the hometown girl fights bad guys and gets the guy. The space aliens, and superhero/commando stuff is not as interesting to me. The dialog was really good and entertaining- especially Spike's one-liners. Some scenes (particularly Willow's interaction with the snake woman), were well done. Other scenes were just a bit odd, like Angel's fight with the World Lion.

I particularly liked the Buffy Story after the magic had been removed from the world. I enjoyed seeing Willow and Buffy in San Francisco which I think is a great place for Buffy to roost.

Pro's
* Enjoyed seeing the gang again, especially Spike
* Snappy, well-written dialog
* Attractive art
* Liked Willow's new romance
* Like seeing the characters in S.F.
* Book appears to be getting back into its groove towards the end
* Kennedy is ousted

Cons
* Felt the first half was a bit on the corny side
* Endless scenes of boring combat featuring minor characters
* Didn't care at all for the "Commitment through Distance" section
* Kitchen-sink approach to plot and story was difficult to follow and not engaging

3.0 out of 5 stars Mostly salvages the story from the previous volume Aug 22 2011
By Beau Yarbrough - Published on Amazon.com

The previous volume of Season Eight, "Twilight," was incredibly silly, to put it mildly. Even Joss Whedon, in his afterword to this volume, allows that they went a little crazy and got away from what makes Buffy a good franchise in that volume.

So this volume is all about wrapping up the over-the-top place we last saw our characters and bringing them back down to earth, literally, in one character's case.

As a result, it's not necessarily the most narratively satisfying -- the big should-be-character-defining death in this volume just sort of HAPPENS and things move on -- because Whedon and company are busy cleaning up all the mess from the night before.

That said, after "Twilight," I wasn't sure if I wanted to come back for Season Nine. "Last Gleaming" changed that. I'm definitely back in, especially since the creators seem to have identified what it was that made Buffy and company work to begin with.

Recommended mostly for diehards who are committed to seeing it through. Not a great volume for casual fans who aren't particularly concerned about Buffy continuity issues.
