Book Description

July 17 2012 Buffy the Vampire Slayer (Dark Horse) (Book 1)
Season 8 ended with a bang that cut the world off from magic - culminating in another set of world-ending problems. Buffy has left her best friend, Willow, powerless, and brought an end to a millennia-long tradition of superpowered girls. By day, Buffy is a twenty-something waitress with no real direction, and even though magic is gone, she's still a Vampire Slayer by night. Bigger problem? Vampires are becoming an epidemic...of zompires! Series creator Joss Whedon teams with Andrew Chambliss (Dollhouse, Once Upon a Time) and Season 8 artist Georges Jeanty for the next life-affirming, world-changing season of the smash hit Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

4.0 out of 5 stars Buffy's back for a ninth season Feb 9 2013
By Maria
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I love the buffyverse, but I felt like nothing much happened compared to previous books. The art is lovely but I'm hoping the story gets more interesting along the way. Heard there was a gay slayer appearing in the buffyverse. Can't wait to see that.

3.0 out of 5 stars Season 9 Premiere Shows Promise July 11 2012
By Chance Lee - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
The Season 9 premiere arc, Freefall, works a lot like the Dracula episode at the beginning of Seaseon 5 on TV: it's fun, but only gives us small hints as to what the focus of the season will be.

I hated Season 8. It felt like some evil demon had come into the world and decided to destroy Buffy (the show) and everything it stood for. They got carried away with doing fanciful things that would never happen on the show due to budget concerns, and the plot was absolutely ludicrous. The end of season 8 provided an interesting set-up for a new season, so here we are.

Enough about season 8. This is a review for Season 9. The world's lack of magic has done a few things to Buffy and co.: it's brought Buffy back to square one, patrolling for vampires solo instead of with an army of super-slayer girls. (She's also forced to read the Vampyr book given to her in Season 1, now that Giles isn't around to do her reading for her.) It's forced poor demons into menial labor jobs. And it's caused Willow to get a TERRIBLE haircut. Man, it's awful. Predictably, they decide that they need to restore magic to the world, and Willow's the one to do it. Let's hope she doesn't turn evil again along the way. Before they get to that point, there is one humorous plot twist, an interesting character that doesn't last long enough, and a big reveal who I'm not sure if she's a new character or someone I'm supposed to recognize but don't because of the transition from live action to artwork.

The art is good. Freefall looks better than the follow-up story "Slayer, Interrupted," which is kind of rough, but you can still recognize who's who. I'm not a comic-book person, just a Buffy fan. What this volume is really about is that Buffy is without her support network. Willow's mad at her, Dawn & Xander are wrapped up in their (icky) relationship. So, it's time for Buffy (the character) to grow up, and become independent. I hope this journey stays somewhat grounded in reality and doesn't become completely absurd along the way.

5.0 out of 5 stars Buffy's in Freefall Aug 6 2012
By Anca Gaiu - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
This volume covers the first 5 issues of the new season, written by Joss Whedon and Andrew Chambliss, plus an eight pages story previously available only on digital (Magical Mystery Tour featuring the Beetles - by Jane Espenson).

I really loved the new down to Earth approach of the story. As always Buffy blames herself for everything, but she got her friends and family who'll always support her. Plus BAM at the end of the "dream" there's a new extremely scary development.

New and old characters very well drawn by Georges Jeanty and Karl Moline

From the alambicated zombified glowified heights of Season 8, Buffy's in Freefall. Literally.
5.0 out of 5 stars Yes! May 19 2013

I'll admit it. I thought season 8 got a little out of control towards the end. It lacked a lot of the small town scoobey gang-ness that I love about Buffy so I'm super excited to her getting back to her roots!
