4.0 out of 5 stars A UK jazz discovery!, Mar 15 2010

I think fans of American hip jazz ensembles such as the Bad Plus and MM&W would really like Get the Blessing, an equally cool Brit group. Listening to their second* album, Bugs In Amber, I was also reminded of the tight experimentalism of John Lurie's Lounge Lizards' CD called Voice of Chunk. The two albums share a brave willingness to go anywhere in pursuit of the vibe, without ever sacrificing a tune's drive and momentum. On Bugs, part of that comes from incorporating rock elements into their jazz sound. But no mistake, this is definitely a jazz group! Saxes and trumpets are freely roaming all over the jazz-scape in improvisatory wildness. If you want to hear the ultracool side of GTB, try my favorite cut, "Tarp," or if you're into more free explorations, try "The Speed of Dark." (Their first album, the also-great All Is Yes, was released by just "The Blessing." I believe the name expansion was done to eliminate confusion with another Blessing group.)
