Review

This book is the perfect book for both first timers and veterans alike. - Graham McCulloch, Publisher, Shortcuts.ns.ca

From the Back Cover

After supervising the construction of more than 500 canoes during his nearly 30 years as an outdoor resources instructor in the Skowhegan, Maine, school system, Gil Gilpatrick shares his voice of experience in guiding both novice and accomplished woodworkers in building a canoe with easy step-by-step instructions.

This revised and expanded 2nd edition of BUILDING A STRIP CANOE includes plans and patterns for eight well-proven designs, most of which are Gil’s own adaptations, and are accompanied by more than 100 photographs and illustrations. Also included are directions for making handwoven cane seats and attractive lightweight, stalwart paddles.

Over many years of experimenting and refining his methods, Gil offers an extensive listing of sources for lumber, tools and supplies. His contemporary construction methods augment the traditional wood strips with fiberglass and WEST SYSTEM epoxy.

From safety in the boat shop to repairs, Gil explains the shortcuts learned from experience. A Maine Guide, he uses his own canoes and tests their performance on the challenging Allagash River every summer.

I purchased this book thinking I would learn a little more about building a canoe, and to my surprise, I found out everything I need to know to complete this project, and full scale plans to boot.
Great book Gil.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Book Nov 10 2010

Like the previous reviewer, I built a boat from the first edition of this book, which I long since lost. I didn't find the newer glossy pages a problem; the finish is like a glossy magazine, but better paper. The full size plans included are a great value. Other books include offset tables, which can take some time (not to mention frustration the first time you do it) to loft. Most designers charge almost $100 for the full sized plans for each boat.

The steps are great for a first time builder. Gilpatrick's methods tend to be more pragmatic and utilitarian than other authors. They're designed to be used, and used a lot. That said, a little bit of nice wood, and one could make these boats just as fancy as any

Also the cedar strip paddle design is also unique and interesting, though I've yet to build it.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great revision Feb 22 2011

This book, in the first edition, provided all the information needed to build 8 different cedar-strip canoes. The presentation of the information itself seemed to jump around a bit too much for my taste. In particular, the chapters dealing with polyester vs epoxy led to some confusion. In this edition the information presentation process flows and that shows the growth of Mr. Gilpatrick as a how-to author. I found the pictures much more clear than the original, of which I have 3 copies, and, no, I won't part with any of them or this version, of which I'm planning to repurchase as well. (One for the shelf, and one for the shop.) Is there any higher endorsement than that? Congratulations, Gil, I think this is a masterpiece!

5.0 out of 5 stars If you want to build a strip canoe, this book is the bomb! Nov 24 2011

This book is worth every penny and more. Just the chapter on how to make/weave your own cane seats are worth the price. Plus there are 8 full size canoe patterns included...You can't find just one canoe pattern for the price of this book. I already owned the old black and white version of this book and used it to learn to build canoes. The revised color version is a nice upgrade. I've purchased several other strip canoe building books by authors, Schade, Moore, Folsom, and those books augment this book by Gil Gilpatrick...You can glean from each author, and tweak your own boat, but if you are thinking about getting started in cedar strip canoe building...This book should be your first purchase and you can manage to build beautiful canoes without having to buy any other book.
