Product Description

There is, according to Burlesque, a nightclub on the Sunset Strip that looks like a blend of Cabaret and Moulin Rouge and employs a full contingent of dancers and musicians in the service of a neo-retro-burlesque-blues program. Presiding over the craziness within is Tess, a grande dame who also performs occasionally and who could only, under these circumstances, be played by Cher. Entering the scene is a young leather-lunged hopeful from Iowa named Ali, played by Christina Aguilera in her movie-acting debut. The vibe of this glitzy concoction is more Flashdance than Showgirls, despite prerelease predictions that the film would be a campfest of epic proportions. In fact, it's more cornball than trashy. Ali hits most of the clichés of the genre: defying Tess's skepticism by proving her mettle during an impromptu stage number; flirting with the nice-guy bartender (Cam Gigandet, of Twilight) whose home she shares for a while, in a purely platonic way, of course, just until she gets her feet on the ground; and keeping a wary eye on the high roller (Eric Dane, of Grey's Anatomy) who wants to possess her, because, you see, he takes whatever he likes. And did we mention that Tess is facing foreclosure on the club in a month's time? Seriously, you didn't see that coming? Writer-director Steve Antin has no embarrassment about putting any of this across, which may be why it all feels weirdly innocent, if relentlessly silly. Stanley Tucci revives his gay assistant from The Devil Wears Prada, Alan Cumming lurks about in an undefined role that might well have been filmed months after everybody else, and Kristen Bell enjoys a few wicked-witch moments as Ali's main rival. Aguilera, needless to say, belts out her songs as only someone with a very large voice can, and Cher stops the show with an old-fashioned torch song ("You Haven't Seen the Last of Me") that is clearly designed as a roof-raiser. (And, by gum, it works.) This is a ridiculous movie, but it gets points for never claiming to be anything else. --Robert Horton

5.0 out of 5 stars A Definite Favourite March 31 2012
This movie is one I can watch over and over again. It has great dancing and terrific songs as well as actors.
I may just have to buy a second copy in case someday this one becomes worn out from use.
Also bought the Burlesque movie soundtrack from Amazon and am very pleased with all my orders.
Amazon has not let me down thus far and I doubt it ever will. I rave about it to anyone that will listen.

This movie is somewhat similar to 'Showgirls', but has more of a family rating, actually it's PG for some swearing! Even though it's about burlesque theater, it is not really sexual at all.

Cher plays the tough old broad running the theater, (she sings a few tunes), and Christina Aguilera plays the newcomer. The story is quite predictable, with a love interest thrown in, and a few love triangles. And the club going out of business unless it's saved, etc etc etc... There are a couple of plot twists, and a few feel good moments.

The best part is when Christinas' mic is sabotaged and she has to sing without it, she proves she has quite a voice!

This is a good movie to pass some time with, if you like love stories and the theater.

5.0 out of 5 stars Entertain!sent at it's best March 6 2015

The talent of the leading ladies is undeniable, but Christina stole the show. What an incredible talent and her acting was excellent as well. Cher will always be one of my favorites as she wraps herself in the roles she plats and commits to the characters fully. The music was awesome and these two ladies can really sing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Christina rocks in this danceworthy musical! March 30 2015
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
Was not a Christina Aguillero fan prior to seeing this but she was very impressive both as a singer & dancer.
The choreography (although similar at times to "Cabaret") was very good and the dancers were stunning.
If you like musicals, this one is contemporary, entertaining & worth watching.

If you love strong power ballads, glittery dance numbers, and small town girl meets the big city head on, Burlesque is for you!! Burlesque stars Christina Aguilera in her screen debut, as Ali Rose, a small town girl who escapes to LA to follow her showbiz dreams. She lands on the Sunset Strip on a Greyhound to wait tables at the legendary Burlesque Lounge and eventually sings and dances her way to the top of the star lineup. Cher (yes THE Cher!)is tough club owner Tess with a heart of gold and a club in financial troubles. She helps Ali find her inner diva AND belts out a couple numbers herself. Kristen Bell (Gossip Girl, Forgetting Sarah Marshall) and Cam Gigandet (Twilight) round out the cast as catty rival Nikki and the sexy bartender-cum-songwriter Jack.

Ali must save the club from ruin, and choose between the smoldering but amoral businessman Marcus (played by Grey's Anatomy heartthrob Eric Dane) and the conflicted affianced Jack. There's this And obviously there's backstage rivalries, and dazzling routines to master as Ali chases her dreams to the glitz and glam of the center stage while rocking some sizzling dance moves. I loved watching her change from a no makeup country girl to this confident glam queen. It's no surpirse that this movie was a hit with the LGBT community - it's all about getting the courage to express yourself through music choreography and makeup!

This movie is like Coyote Ugly, Moulin Rouge and Chicago rolled into a modern day Vegas production. Itexplodes on the screen in a fun musical romp. The soundtrack features 10 original songs from Aguilera and Cher. With the perfect mix of drama, music and theatrical flair, Burlesque is a great movie to buy or rent for your next girls night in!!
