I find it highly enjoyable the level of cynicism and arrogance of our so-called "educated" ones. Since when did poetry have to be "on the level" with you and all of your (easily attainable) "knowledge"? Last checked, poetry is about the soul and what's in it. Are all of our "artists" these days about labels, or has "damn the man!" become a thing of the past? Perhaps I have a particular bias at the moment, but it's always been a predominant thought that what a person has to say comes from a place that's real. Michael Madsen is a not a person who needs to toss out a few words to gain a couple'a bucks, he clearly does it because it's something that he feels is important to him as an individual. As for the rest of you, try it sometime - for real and without the callous judgement (as in actually reading the words for what they are) - and stop worrying about everybody else. I'm sure all of you could use a good spring cleaning yourselves. Nobody's going for the Pulitzer here, so relax.

I'm not allowed to have a lighter, Oct 1 2003
This review is from: Burning in Paradise (Paperback)
Michael Madsen is cool. I gave this five stars. He's got his own lighter. Some people don't think lighters are cool, but they're like my mom and they don't have one so how would they know. I don't like poetry. It makes me mad, and his poems are dirty. I especially don't like dirty poetry because they have words you can't use unless you want to go to jail. Did you ever see that movie Donnie Brasco. If you look closely, you'll see him. There are exactly zero poems in Donnie Brasco. I liked it better than Donnie Darko. I gave this five stars.

Very disappointed!, Dec 12 2002

I love Michael Madsen, but except for maybe 1 poem, this book was terrible. I am not a big poetry lover, however I have 2 friends that love both poetry & M.M. & they didn't like it either! I couldn't give it away, I begged both of them to take it for their own collections, but they snorted and gave it back me quickly! The few poems that actually seemed to mean something were quite depressing & made him seem very lonely. I would advise you not to buy this book, or to get a cheap, used copy first! Mine is still looking for a good home! =)
