Product Description

It's hard to tell whether Missouri-born, Vancouver- and Toronto-based guitarist Jim Byrnes is better known for his music or his acting. The blues singer moved from America to Canada in the 1960s to make music, but his real success has been on television as a character actor in the TV series Wiseguy, Neon Rider, and Highlander. Burning/I Turned My Nights into Days revives Byrnes's musical career, reissuing two albums from '81 and '87 respectively. Both records feature bare-knuckle blues-rock rooted in Byrnes's gruff voice and a wall of horns. He has the tough-guy singer part nailed down on cuts like "You Don't Know" and his cover of Elmore James's "Shake Your Moneymaker," yet while the performances themselves are strong, the original material here is sometimes derivative and often dated. --Matt Galloway

4.0 out of 5 stars Husky, Gritty Vocalist, Feb 15 2003

I don't know what the other reviewer was listening to re: "clear" vocals. This guy has a voice that sounds like smoke and whiskey.

5.0 out of 5 stars True Blues, May 10 2000
By Catya - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Burning / I Turned My Nights Into Days (Audio CD)
I've listened to this CD, and its companion, "That River", on the road from Alaska to Mexico. I never tire of Jim Byrnes's clear, honest voice and clean, blue guitar chords. It's refreshing to find such an artist singing both old songs and new straight from the heart. The songs are alive, missing the flat, overproduced quality that dogs too many "popular" blues productions. Listen to this album, and "That River". It's the real deal.

4.0 out of 5 stars This man is HOT!, Feb 7 1999
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Burning / I Turned My Nights Into Days (Audio CD)
I'm not much of a fan of this type of music, normally, but Jim is an exception! I've had the pleasure to see him in person, and he's not only talented, but a personable man as well. For those who came to know him through "Highlander"...Dawson rocks!

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant, as usual, Dec 22 1998
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Burning / I Turned My Nights Into Days (Audio CD)
I've been a fan of Jim Byrnes since I first saw him on Highlander. Then I was amazed to discover that, not only does the man do voice acting for animated shows, has a television career going back years, but is a brilliant blues guitarist and an incredible soulful singer. I had the pleasure and priviledge to meet the man in person in Scotland last year and hear him sing 'unplugged.' He put in a wonderful performance and his recordings are just as good. The funky, bluesy rockin' is guaranteed to make you 'lay down and shimmy, and stand up and shout.'
