Synopsis

While the United States has perhaps the most advanced health care system in the world, it also has the second-highest infant mortality rate of any industrialized nation, and many have begun to question conventional wisdom regarding the way obstetricians deal with childbirth. While midwives preside over the majority of births in Europe and Japan, fewer than ten percent of American mothers employ them, despite their proven record of care and success. How do American doctors make their choices regarding the way their patients give birth, and who is intended to benefit? Director Abby Epstein and producer Ricki Lake offer a probing look at childbirth in America in the documentary The Business of Being Born, which explores the history of obstetrics, the history and function of midwives, and how many common medical practices may be doing new mothers more harm than good. The Business of Being Born was screened as part of the 2007 Tribeca Film Festival. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

3.0 out of 5 stars Not as informative as I would have liked, Sep 4 2009
I think this is a good video for someone learning about the history of medicalized childbirth for the first time. As someone who is already familiar with this, I was looking for a more informative discussion on the risks or drawbacks of medical birth interventions - what pitocin does, for example. There was some explanation, but in a very simplified format. For the most part, the message was, medicalized birth interventions are REALLY BAD, with little discussion of why. I wanted to use the video to help reassure family members that my choice to go with a midwife is safe and not compromising my health or the health of the baby. However, after seeing the video, they remain dubious, even with lovely footage of ecstatic home births. This video seems to be one for those who are already on board with midwifery, but does not contain enough factual information for those with misgivings.

4.0 out of 5 stars Informative, Intereting, Inspirational., Jul 19 2009
I watched this DVD with my husband in the early weeks of my second pregnancy. I am Canadian, so some aspects of the video did not apply to me, but I found it incredibly informative and it answered a lot of questions I had about the birthing process in North America. Although I had a good hospital birth experience when I delivered my twin boys two years ago, this movie has inspired me to try another path when my daughter is born in a couple of weeks. We'll be attempting a home birth with a rented labour/birth tub. I enjoyed this video a lot.
