Review

"Beaton ... does a brilliant job of depicting Agatha's struggles with aging and keeping her detective agency afloat. Her romantic upheavals (will she ever marry close friend Sir Charles Fraith?) continue to tantalize."
--Publishers Weekly (Starred Review)

"Testy Agatha, continuing her habit of falling for unsuitable men, scores again with a cunning mixture of satire and mystery."
--Kirkus Reviews

"Beaton is a master of the cozy formula — there are plenty of red herrings, a large cast of suspects and an eagle-eye view of village life."
--RT Book Reviews

Book Description

Cranky yet lovable Agatha Raisin has always been ambivalent about holiday cheer, though her cozy village of Carsely has long prided itself on its Christmas festivities. Until now. This year, local Health and Safety Board officer John Sunday is threatening to undo some of Carsley’s most time-honored traditions. The tree on top of the church? A public menace. The decorations hanging on the lampposts? Hazardous. Even May Dimwoody’s homemade toys are deemed unsafe for the children. Bah humbug! The Carsely Ladies Society is in an uproar and will do anything to put a stop to this Scrooge—only to find that someone else has done it for them…with a kitchen knife. Soon Agatha’s detective agency is on the case. But when a man has made as many enemies as Mr. John Sunday, it’s hard to know where to start—or how to stop the killer from striking again.

3.0 out of 5 stars A Slap Dash Agatha Raisin Mystery, Oct 28 2010

"And put a knife to your throat
If you are a man given to appetite." -- Proverbs 23:2 (NKJV)

It's hard to tell in this story who is more distracted, the character, Agatha Raisin, or the author, M.C. Beaton. While I have been known to complain a bit about earlier Agatha Raisin novels that develop slowly, I certainly didn't intend for the books to be packed with three times as many cases, developments, and characters as could be humorously handled for our relaxed pleasure in an inglenook next to a cozy fire on a chilly night.

As a result, the story sometimes feels as though it were written by someone other than M.C. Beaton who was following an M.C. Beaton outline, but without the ability to employ the light touch needed to make such a story charming, gently irritating, and fun, all at the same time.

In many ways, the story read more like what Janet Evanovich would write about a frantic Stephanie Plum that the earlier stories in the Agatha Raisin series. There's definitely some goofiness here, but I didn't find it appealing at all.

I read the hard cover version of the book, but I cannot help but note that the Kindle version is price way too high.

Unless you feel that you don't want to miss a single book in the series, you could skip this story and not miss anything that's important to the series.

5.0 out of 5 stars Delightful Mystery Frolic With Agatha, Oct 17 2010
By Scottish Lass - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Busy Body: An Agatha Raisin Mystery (Hardcover)
M. C. Beaton is a wonderfully creative and prolific writer. The old Aggie is back in her latest book Busy Body. There are so many twists and turns that I had a hard time putting it down. A very engaging book. I disagree with one of the reviewers who said there were too many characters and it was confusing. That is one thing I love about most British mysteries, like Inspector Lewis and Morse, they are intricate and that keeps the story exciting. Of course, Beaton, throws in that touch of humor that makes all of us love Agatha and her escapades. I've come to love Beaton's cast of returning characters --- the wise and ever dependable Mrs. Bloxby; stingy but charming Sir Charles; flamboyant and flaky Roy Silver, and the list goes on. Now I'm left longing for Beaton's next Agatha Raisin mystery. Guess I'll have to wait another year. As Agatha would say, "Snakes and bastards!" Ms. Beaton, please keep writing those wonderful Agatha Raisin books.

I really have thorougly enjoyed reading all of the Agatha Raisin mysteries which are set in the lovely Cotswolds of England. Busy Body was another good one. I finished the book in a day and by the time I read the last sentence I was wishing there was another one to continue the story. I find all the characters in the book enjoyable and of course, Agatha is simply fantastic! Very entertaining.

3.0 out of 5 stars not one of the best of this series, Nov 19 2010

Love Agatha Raisin, but this one was not that great.
Thought the plot and other details, seemed as if this
was written in a hurry. But will still read any other of this series.
