3.0 out of 5 stars Adorable idea, but so short!, Dec 1 2008

Cute "fastener" pages include alligator with zipper teeth and a "snap" turtle. I would have liked to see more. Colored binding on pages is a cute touch, but will surely unravel once I wash it since the edges are not finished.

3.0 out of 5 stars Cloth book makes it harder for small hands to manipulate, Oct 13 2011

This book is darling, made of cloth: it contains a small selection of animals, each paired with an accessory. There is a large button, one zipper, two corded loops (bunny ears), one snap, and a velcro clasp. As one reviewer mentioned, the book is rather short, but for me this is not the issue, as little ones tend to have short attention spans.

What catches my attention when watching and helping my 20-month baby/toddler attempt to interact with the activities is that the book is made of cloth. The result: her attempts at performing the "tasks" are thwarted by the book's reaction to her small, uninformed hands. When she tries to zip the alligator's mouth, the cloth bends with her hand's movement so she succeeds at turning the page when all she's trying to do is use the zipper (she's more than able to zip and unzip all my handbags and her sweaters, so it's not an issue of being unaware of how to manipulate a zipper). The loop ears are just there: I don't even know what to do with them; the snap on the turtle's eye requires my little one to realize that she must use one hand to push back one page to keep it from moving while using the other hand to pull to unclasp the snap. She's not there yet.

So, I think the book is cute, the illustrations (black and white) are adorable, but the form (light cloth) of the book makes it nearly impossible for younger children/toddlers--who are now trying to master these activities--to manipulate its activities. The positive? You can throw the book in the wash.

I know that the book is marketed to ages 4+, but most children over 4 are able to accomplish these tasks, and are unlikely to be attracted to the simple black and white illustrations. Poor choice on my part, considering my child is so much younger than the recommended age, but it does seem that the recommended age is a bit old for this type of book (that a little more sophistication would be needed to retain their attention). Anyways, I wouldn't buy this book again and I would not purchase it as a gift.

5.0 out of 5 stars Button Nose, Jan 12 2009
By B. R. Vania - Published on Amazon.com

First, a 5-star rating just for affordable availability. Years ago, there were learn-to-button-snap-zip-tie books for toddlers on every shelf. They seem to have gone the way of the dinosaurs, though I did find one that cost over $50!

This one is well designed for the toddler-age child. Not too much vocabulary, not to many distracting visuals and the button is large enough for those who have yet to tune their fine motor skills or the helpful but arthritic gramma.
