Buying MacKenzie's Baby, Jan 7 2007

Kate Hartley had deeply loved her ex-husband Mack and if truth be told, loves him still. Which is why a little too much alcohol leads to a night of passion that has consequences.
Mack threw Kate out after coming to believe that she was nothing but a gold digger who married him for his money. He's determined to have his child, even if it means marrying Kate again.
Buying Mackenzie's Baby is a deeply emotional story. I was caught from the first page and was unable to stop reading. Kate broke my heart as she struggled with the love she has for Mack and the confusion as to why he looked at her with such contempt. That being said, I had a hard time with Mack's character, from his infidelity, which he apologized for, but I could never truly get over it, to his constant defense of and somewhat ambiguous relationship with Kate's sister which I felt at times was an added humiliation for Kate that was hard to forgive. And when Mack finally discovers the truth, the ending feels rushed. I could never really come to terms with Mack's sudden decision to fix his relationship with Kate or Kate's easy capitulation after being treated so badly. While I had trouble enjoying Buying Mackenzie's Baby, Kim Rees is an author with genuine talent. She easily grabs the reader with her ability to make you feel the emotions flow from the pages and I'm sure the future will see her star on the rise.

An emotional roller coaster ride, Jun 8 2007

Dr, Kate Hartley is desperate. Flat broke and pregnant, she has no choice but to seek out her ex husband. But she accept his terms?
Mack has been fooled by her once. He can't decide which is greater, his need for revenge or his desire to satisfy his grandfather's demands.
Ms. Rees writes compelling characters that really get my emotions going. I think at one point in the story I hated everyone except Kate, but I still wanted to throttle her. Even though I had feelings of anger and frustration, the ending was well worth the read. It takes a lot of skill to arouse emotions in your reader, and Ms. Rees has that skill. In Spades.

Sean claims he doesn't want a woman who only wants him for his money. However, he is seen all around w/ Francesca, Kate's sister, who only CARES about his wallet (when she first meets him she wants to know how much he is worth.) Believes that Kate only wanted him for his money so of course she had to GO, then years later he decides that if that is all Kate wants he is fine w/ that as he has so much money - guess he didn't have that much before? He thinks that he keeps in touch w/ Francesca because she gives him a connection to Kate, his ex-wife, yet he knows NOTHING about what is going on in Kate's life - he didn't know she had a PhD; he says his grandfather is a stupid old man who just says stupid things, yet he believes these stupid things and lets them affect him; he doesn't want anyone to know about Kate being pregnant yet he tells others; he is shocked and appalled that Kate thinks he is a philanderer like his father, yet Kate SAW him w/ his PA after he had kicked her out!! He never introduced Kate to his family when they were previously married. They married for love too. Mack/Sean never defended Kate either and he was always willing to believe the worst of her.
I'm wondering if he can find his way out of a paper bag, because he never once wonders what happened to all this money Kate had supposedly taken from him. He obviously didn't care that much because one would wonder if someone could be doing drugs too, but not Sean he is blissfully unaware so it makes you wonder what he thinks w/? Which also made Kate's fear of him finding her if she ran away again ridiculous! He only found her that time because of the housekeeper! Geeze!
Francesca and Mack/Sean's kiss in public seemed very similar to one that Mack had shared w/ Kate earlier. . . . EEEWWW!! Also Kate believed there was a r/s b/w them because of the way Mack looked at Francesca and that was never truly explained. Kate thinks PA's son is Mack's and he seems shocked that she would even make that statement. Did he forget that Kate saw him w/ the assistant? "I make judgments on what I see, on what I am told, Mack." And he deflects saying that she keeps inventing women when she wants him herself. He says that Kate enjoys believing the worst of him - once again he doesn't remember the FACT that she told him a few days previously that she saw him w/ his PA years ago at the office!
Francesca stirs up more trouble and stupid Mack lets her get away w/ things he is the one that makes a mess of his own life! Yet he doesn't seem to like to admit fault in anything as acknowledged when he is telling his mother about why Kate married him both times.
"You used me, Kate. I don't forget and I don't forgive." Yet seems he is willing to do that for Francesca never stopping to think about what she had done and almost cost him because of her lies. Oh but you are supposed to believe that true love makes him able to forgive! Puhleaze!! Francesca says Mack never judges (nor questions apparently) he gives her what she asks for freely. He sure did judge Kate though. When he has his brilliant epiphany he thinks he loves her and will make whole mess right if it kills him, yet all he has to do is touch her and he is in w/ a quick forgive me! Wants her to fight for him to save him from Francesca, but he didn't ever fight for Kate. Later, he wants Kate to forgive Francesca. However, he seems to forget that if Francesca had her way he wouldn't have the family he has now. Where is his grudge NOW? Why wasn't Francesca prosecuted? I'm thinking Kate should be spouting those words of use and not forgetting and forgiving to this idiot!!
