Product Description

From Library Journal

One is always pleased to see a well- illustrated, substantial publication on Friedrich's art and life, but the format of this English-language version of a cata log for a 1984 exhibition held at the Cen tre Culturel du Marais in Paris actually works against our full appreciation of its content. The inventiveness of the layout in fact becomes somewhat irritating and makes the book hard to use. Neverthe less, the richness of the text and the very high quality of the many illustrations combine to make this the most compre hensive work in English now available on Friedrich and, thus, an important ac quisition for any collection with an inter est in 19th-century art. 5.0 out of 5 stars Provides an in-depth understanding of the artist & his work, Feb 14 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: CASPER DAVID FRIEDRICH LINE & (Hardcover)
This highly illustrative tome includes pencil sketches and tracings showing lines of force for Friedrich's major works. In addition, an in-depth discussion of his life, including cultural and socio-political influences, is discussed concurrent with a review of not only his major masterpieces, but his minor, early works as well. An absolute must for anyone who has become enamored with his work, or the work of other similar sublime, landscape artists of the period.

2.0 out of 5 stars A Strange Little Book, July 11 2010

This review is from: CASPER DAVID FRIEDRICH LINE & (Hardcover)
Although the illustrations are well done and some printed on tissue, the lack of non-biographical text makes the book a mystery. For much of the book, partial views of paintings are presented without any discussion; the subtitle "Line and Transparency" is never explained. This makes me wonder if the book was intended as the backup for a lecture.

5.0 out of 5 stars THE KINGDOM OF THE SOUL, Oct 12 2004
By Boyd Rice - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: CASPER DAVID FRIEDRICH LINE & (Hardcover)
Friedrich's work celebrates the solitude of the soul & man's union with nature. It is lonely, bleak & brilliant. It transports you to another place & time, one far removed from the chaos of modern life. This must be the definative work on CDF, so far as i know. A "must have", if ever there were one.
