In preparation for an exam Cisco Press adds valuable features to assist you in studying efficiently and helpful methods to make passing within your reach. One of the features that are always included in books is the "Do I Know This Already" section at the beginning of the chapters. You are able to test your knowledge on the chapters before you begin reading. From the results you are able to know where you need to focus. At the end of the chapter there is a Review All Key Topics section that covers the key topic elements providing you with page numbers to hone in on. Moving to The Foundation Topics which cover the core sections of each chapter focusing on what needs to be mastered to prepare for the exam. What more can you ask for? Well, there is CD containing practice exams and information on how to obtain more exams for extended practice. Learn the subject matters that will be focused on in the exam. There is no way you will ever be able to know memorize the questions, just make sure you have enough knowledge on the topics so you will be able to think through the questions presented on the vendor's exam. Next, there is a chapter reference section which details the chapters with the subject matter covered in the exam. There are numerous tables with a lot of information and screenshots to help you learn and visualize the information presented. You will be taken from start to finish in your knowledge of security for this exam.

The preparation starts with a VPN refresher. The basics are covered yet its extensive. The book continues on in a methodical fashion covering every part of security. Configuring policies, inheritance and attributes are important in aspects of controlling access to the resources. Connection profiles and group policies are covered with detailed graphics and steps to assist in navigating the software. All aspects of connections and the deployments involved for remote use by users, Clientless SSL VPN settings are covered from basic to advance settings ensuring availability of service. When connecting with users you run the risk of harmful software. As we know this is an issue that is happening more frequently than we would like. Cisco Secure Desktop was created to perform a prescan before login for secure local environments and remote connections. Keylogger software can be detected on Windows 32-bit machines. I can only imagine this will be extended to 64-bit eventually.

As with all security topics the information is extensive. Cisco is a major player in the industry so you can rest assured, what you will need to master the exam has been provided to you. Their name is on THIS ! It must be thoroughly covered because it is so important to an environment. In preparing for an exam, Cisco makes sure you have every aspect covered. This is a comprehensive and well thought out book to guide you through your exam. If you appreciate the design of the book and how it has presented the topics and highlighted their method of studying and preparing for the exam, you will do well.

If you want to pass the CCNP security VPN exam, this is the book that you should buy.
Lot of Cisco press book starts their chapters with a "Do I Know This Already ?" quizz, and this one is one them. It allows you to know if your level is advanced or not :) . I believe that even if I knew some concept, the questions were tricky enough.
The Author will start with a brief introduction about the ASA. When I say brief I mean 50 pages. For those that think that the ASA book from Omar Santos would be a good read instead of this book aren't right and wrong.
The ASA book is a good read in complement of this one. This one really focus on VPN theory/implementation and theory
Every type of VPN will be explained in this book using diagrams, configurations and appendixes.
The anyconnect chapter was one of the most interesting to me because this subject was new to me...

The last part of the book is focused on Site to Site VPN which are very common nowadays. You cannot miss that part since it is VERY VERY important to anyone in the security field. The high availability will give you all the expertise you need in order to make the work done :)

This books reminds me the CCNA book when I first start my Networking career 3 years ago, I immediately fell in love with that technology and want to dive more and more into the security.

I promise you this is a book that you must read !
4.0 out of 5 stars comprehensive preparation Aug 11 2011

For what might be a dry subject to some readers, Hooper starts off this long cram review with a light hearted take - 'Your heart and mind fill with excitement as you stare at the shining rectangular, rack-mountable beacon of near endless security possibilities. You let out a faint giggle... your new friend [the ASA device] shares your enthusiasm...' Reminds me of how Isaac Asimov would often start his science column in a science fiction magazine with an informal anecdote. Anyway, the book is quite comprehensive, but Hooper forewarns that you should already be cognisant of how the Internet architecture functions. The security aspects of Cisco hardware covered here presuppose this facile background.

Access Control Lists are a key idea; this has been around long before Cisco. You can see how Cisco has made it easy to install an ACL on their hardware. There are also several policies and profiles that define the different security and access aspects of a VPN. These reflect the possibility that in a company there will be different groups of people with different access needs, and these needs can be far different. Imagine at the simplest level that guests might have very limited access compared to employees.

The Cisco implementation of a VPN comes with detailed logging. You might be familiar with how a standard web server [eg. Apache] does logging of various client connections. Here in chapter 6, the corresponding Cisco VPN has far more detailed analysis that can be recorded. This includes the number of sessions that use each of a set of common encryption algorithms, statistics on compression [to the extent that any is happening], and statistics on the different protocols [eg. SSL and L2TP] passing through the machine. When I mentioned above that you need a background in the Internet architecture, this also includes a working acquaintance with the protocols. So L2TP is not explained further in this text.

One interesting feature of the Cisco VPN is how for improved security it extends onto a remote user's desktop. The latter might be running a common PC operating system like Microsoft Windows or linux. Cisco has implemented a Secure Desktop that is installed and runs on the client. As a minor tweak, your company can customise this to put its logo onto the CSD.

Speaking of client desktop security, Cisco offers a very nice little piece of code that does keystroke logger detection. Unfortunately it is only currently implemented on Microsoft Windows 32 bit. But at least for this case, you can download it and it then scans the disk for known keylogger software. The text does not go into how the code knows this - whether from say signatures of known code, or from some type of deeper analysis. I think it's probably the former. So we cannot tell from the narrative how robust the scanner is against polymorphic variants that have different hash signatures. But to the extent that the scanner works, it can be configured with a list of approved keyloggers that the sysadmin has installed on the desktop. A detection outside this list will trigger an alert. Plus, the scanner can scan user and kernel mode keyloggers. Presumably this means it has to run with kernel mode privileges. The one main limitation is that the scanner cannot find a hardware keylogger.

Going further, the CSD can detect if the SSL VPN session runs inside a virtual machine on the desktop. Shades of the Matrix! The detection can then feed into a runtime policy of whether to require that the session be inside a virtual machine or not.

The text contains much more information on how the CSD and the VPN client has been built out.
