5.0 out of 5 stars Best CISSP prep book out there! May 24 2003
By A Customer
I just got the email, I passed! CISSP for Dummies is concise, easy to read, and tells you *exactly* what to study and concentrate on for the Exam.
I also read the Wiley book, boring and full of gramatical errors, some of them were really confusing.
Along with the Flash Cards and Boson tests, the Dummies book is worth every penny! I could not have passed without it.
I would recommend the Wiley test exam questions (separate book), they helped a great deal too.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not sufficient to pass the CISSP exam! Sept. 30 2009
By Recluce
The CISSP exam is certainly not for dummies, but if you are interested in this book, you already know that. This book on it's own does not cover the 10 CBK domains sufficiently to pass the CISSP exam with any degree of confidence - but the authors DO tell you so at the very beginning.

This book can be useful as a first, concise read to give you an overview of the CISSP exam, but you definetly want to follow up with either the "All In One Exam Guide" or the "Official (ISC)2 Guide to the CISSP CBK".

So if you decide to get the book in this context, please be aware of a few deficiencies that still exist:

1.) Some of the material in the book is somewhat dated. For example: the author portraits the MD5 hash algorithm as "strong, fast and resilient", while it is in fact, today, broken and deprecated.

2.) There are some factual errors. An example: "role-based access control" is described in Chapter 4 as a form of "discretionary access control". The CBK says the opposite!

3.) Some topics are handled inconsistantly or way too superficial. For example, the authors tell you in chapter 6, that ECB, CBC, CFB and OFB are "four modes of DES". The explanations of the four operation modes are almost comical in their lack of facts and some important information is missing, like the fact that ECB can leave recognizable patterns even in the encrypted data. Only the authors know why they don't even mention the fact that the same operation modes are also used in AES.

4.) While the book claims that the tests on the CD are configurable, they are in fact not.

My facit: get this book to find out if CISSP is right for you or as a first, easy read. Do NOT rely on this book for your actual exam preparation and do expect quite a number of errors to exist in this book. If you are already committed to the CISSP exam or have sufficient prior experience, save the money.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent reference Oct. 16 2002

Everyone knows that the CISSP exam is not for dummies, but don't let the title of this book put you off. It was great as a review/final cram before I took the exam. I think it would make an excellent first read, too. I studied using The CISSP Prep Guide and an online study group and then bought this book on the recommendation of someone in my study group. There is a chapter for each of the ten domains. There are no frills here, but the coverage is accurate, balanced, and matched pretty closely what I found on the exam. I particularly appreciated the study tools on the CD-ROM. The flash cards were pure genius. I was able to download them to my Palm, and I quizzed myself in the car all the way to the testing location. I definitely got my money's worth out of this book and highly recommend it to others sitting or considering sitting for the CISSP exam.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not as good as I was hoping Feb. 27 2003
I just took the CISSP exam this week and wanted to come back and give my thoughts on this book. I was fairly disappointed in the lack of detail that this book provided, and wouldn't recommend it as your single study resource. In my opinion, this book lacks the amount of detail that the average person would need to get their CISSP certification. I used two resouces while studying for the exam. (this one and The CISSP Prep Guide) I thought the prep guide was better written and I also liked the advanced question and answer sections that that book has. If I was starting over again, I wouldn't use CISSP for Dummies as one of my study resources.

5.0 out of 5 stars Don't let the title throw you off! Oct. 8 2002

This book is jam packed with valuable exam-specific material. I think this book is great for a first review of the material as well as a last minute cram before the exam. I bought the Prep Guide too, but, so far, I've found the information here extremely compact, accurate, and digestible. By the way, the CD is a God-send-- in addition to the test engine, the authors included a very practical set of flash cards with at least 300 sample test questions and answers (supplied on separate cards) that you can print or even download to your PDA. This is just genius and alone worth the price of the book.
