The serious student of French language and literature can't afford to be without this 5-volume reference, a standard for many years.

Rich with literary references, etymology, and cross-references among terms, the Grand Robert will answer nearly any questions about meaning, derivation and usage. I find myself drawn aside into unexpected byways nearly every time I consult it.

The sole shortcoming I can note is that it does not have as complete a collection of Québecisms as I would like to see. Unfortunately, no other dictionary I've come across so far does any better.
