1.0 out of 5 stars Egregiously Inaccurate on ME, Oct 1 2011
This review is from: CURRENT Medical Diagnosis and Treatment 2012, Fifty-First Edition (Paperback)
This year's Current still lists "CFS" (aka ME) as "Fatigue & Chronic Fatigue Syndrome...p.39" in Chp.2 "Common Symptoms." Need it be pointed out once again that ME is a severe neuro-immune disease not Idiopathic Chronic Fatigue?

I refer the authors to the ME International Consensus Criteria for accurate information on ME:
[...]

I would love to give Current a five-star rating and will very gladly do so if an accurate entry on ME is substituted. I do think it is generally a very good work. Pls take info from the ME ICC, supra, and/or contact me for more info or to find an authority who will draft an accurate piece on ME for you for free. Thank you.

There are some accurate statements in the piece on ME, but many harmful inaccuracies taken from studies or articles by proven frauds such as Simon Wessely and which use the Reeves and Sharpe definitions of "CFS" which are both patently invalid on their face.

Here are a sample of the egregious inaccuracies in this article:
"Persons with confirmed CFS report a much greater frequency of childhood trauma and psychopathology..."
"Acyclovir...and low-dose hydro-cortosone do not improve symptoms."
"There is a greater occurrence of past and current psychiatric diagnoses in patients with this syndrome."
"All patients...should be reassured that full recovery is eventually possible in most cases."

I bought this to review for PANRE. Having been in a surgical sub-specialty for the last 11 years I needed a good overview in general medicine. The layout is clear & the information is up-to-date. It is a good reference for those who need to review their long-forgotten general medicine as it is relatively concise (compared to, say, Harrison's). I have been able to cover a chapter in a day or two. They have a nice "Essentials of Diagnosis" that prefaces certain sections, ie. stuff that will kill your patient & you need to know! If I pass, it will have been an excellent investment!

5.0 out of 5 stars A must for Pharmacists, Oct 29 2011

This review is from: CURRENT Medical Diagnosis and Treatment 2012, Fifty-First Edition (Paperback)
As a pharmacist, we are many times put into the position of having to know the same disease state guidelines and treatment therapies as physicians. Finding that information can be frustrating if you don't keep a good library of resources. This Lang resource is what you need. Quick and concise is what I would characterize this as. Having Dipiro's, Koda Kimble and Goodmans and Gillmans for pharmacotherapy/therapeutics, all of which are good in their own way, this book in some ways outdoes them.

Don't get me wrong, you won't find the in depth MOA's, pathways etc of drugs in this resource. What you will find are the basics of disease states, treatments parameters and guidelines. For example, Chapter 10, Heart Disease has nearly 50 different disease states included. Some topics such as STEMI, NSTEMI and Chronic Stable Angina are covered more indepth than say Tricuspid Stenosis, but being able to find this type of information in one source quick and easy is more than worth the price of this book.

The quality of the paper is good, highlighting doesn't really leak through to the other side of the paper, but can be seen slightly from the other side. It is soft cover and heavy. Very good book and a must for heath professionals of all disciplines. Be sure to get the latest version though, guidelines are updated periodically so keep current.

I am a practicing physician & regularly buy one of the CMDT series to keep as a current quick treatment reference. I have been using these books since medical school. They have never let me down. The info is pithy & comprehensive. I find it quite useful
