Hi De Hi De Hi De Ho Jan. 30 2005
By Steven Hellerstedt - Published on Amazon.com
Format: DVD
About an hour's worth of musical numbers featuring Cab Calloway and orchestra. Although the numbers are presented in music video format (song title, star, etc.) the source is not given. Most appear to come from MANHATTAN MERRY-GO-ROUND (1937) and HI-DE-HO (1947). Acceptable but varying video and audio quality. Annoying, sporadic appearances of company watermark throughout.

Calloway was a world class entertainer, and watching him perform his standards is infectious fun. In fact, I think I'd probably avoid an audio only cd because I'd much rather watch than listen to him. Modern audiences probably remember him best for his performance of "Minnie the Moocher" in THE BLUES BROTHERS. At its best, a fun peek back at one hep jive cat.

Track list -

1- Mama, I Wanna Make Rhythm

2- Blues in the Night

3- Minnie the Moocher

4- Virginia, Georgia and Caroline

5- The Skunk Song (featuring the Cabliers)

6- Hi De Ho

7- St. James Infirmary

8- Dawntime

9- Righteous Riff

10- Hey Now

11- Caravan - (instrumental)

12- Little Old Lady from Baltimore (Peters Sisters)

13- Nettie

14- Blow Top Blues

15- I Can't Give You Anything But Love (featuring Jonah Jones)

Amazing collection of Count Basie hits Dec 13 2011
By Robert C. Meadows - Published on Amazon.com
Format: DVD Verified Purchase
There are flaws with this DVD, primarily having to do with video. Many of the numbers are quite murky, especially the 2 songs featuring Billie Holiday (which are available in pristine video on other DVDs). Nevertheless, NOBODY swings like Basie. You get 17 songs in 37 minutes, some with Big Band (4 trumpets, 4 trombones, 5 saxes, piano, bass and drums) and more with a smaller combo (piano, bass, drums, clarinet, sax, trumpet, guitar). Vocalists include Helen Humes, Ethel Waters and Jimmy Rushing. On bonus tracks, Fats Waller's mugging and playing is shown in 3 numbers: "Your Feets Too Big", "Ain't Misbehavin'" and "Honeysuckle Rose".

Several of the selections have excellent video, especially the Big Band selections. There is a slight discrepancy in the synching of the sound and the video, but it is close enough to not be irritating. Despite the flaws, which would normally drop the star rating to a 3 or 4, Basie's PLAYING is worth a 6 or 7!!!

A BIG ORCHESTRA JAZZ LOVER April 24 2011
By J. Alberson - Published on Amazon.com
Format: DVD Verified Purchase
This DVD appears to have been compiled from very old tapes or films. No effort was made to enhance the video or the audio; as a result, the final product has marginal quality. I would not recommend this DVD to anyone.

One of the greats Jan. 29 2009
By Sgt. Bilko - Published on Amazon.com

As much as I do not care for jazz, I did give this also as a gift to a jazz fan, and he was very pleased with it. Even I know Count Basie. He with the other greats were pioneers in this uniquely American music that captured the world. If you do not like jazz, but know someone that does, this is the one for them along with the "Legends of Jazz".
jivin' back in time. Sept. 26 2012

A fun look back at the talented Mr. Calloway. His music, slick style, and physical agility are amazing and fun to watch & listen. He is the precurser of modern hip-hop and jive, and brings to life the excitement and energy of the Harlem Renaissance. This is a compilation of performances- and the quality of some are better than others. But for the price, this is worth adding to your music-history library. LOOOOVE "Minnie the MOOCHER," that "low-down hoochy-koocher", and the racy lyrics that hint at "forbidden" escapades.
